Well ... cheap and dirty, I would take an old telescoping antenna from that broken radio in the corner and affix (cough Ducttape Cough) it to the carb, pull it out extended, and S L O W L Y lower the hood.

... you could also put a work lite underhood, add your video camera somehere (cough Ducttaped to the underside of the hood cough) and again lower it slowly

Loosely crumpled, strategically placed aluminum foil will work the same way also...you can get a "snapshot" of the entire air cleaner lid.

Engine roll is something that will be a factor worth noting, too.

Thanks for the ideas, my childeren are now grown so could not stuff them under the hood with a flashlight anymore.

    Copied from a different forum, i dont think the pix will load, but have a read anyway.;

http://www.corvettecentral.com/catalog.htm Check the C3 catalogue for "Aircleaner".

I see lots of threads with people asking what air cleaner to use to get just that little bit of extra room so they can close the hood without having interference problems because of their air cleaner or because the intake is too tall.

    Problem solved - with pics!

Most generic parts store 14x3 chrome air cleaners have a base with a drop something between 0" - 1.25". There are a rare few out there with a 1-3/8" drop. If you're like me, this isn't enough, even though it is close. Here's the solution:

This air cleaner I bought is a reproduction part for:

    -1970-72 LT1 Corvette/Camaro
    -1969 Camaro Z/28 (302ci)
    -1966-69 Corvette 427ci 1x4bbl (L88)

This air cleaner will work with a dual-feed Holley carb, like a double pumper, because it was designed by GM to work with the above engines, which did come from the factory with dual-feed Holley carbs. It has a HUGE 2.00" drop! It has a large breather tube welded onto it, so you can use a crank-case vent setup similar to what your stock 3rdgen 4bbl or TBI air cleaner had, instead of resorting to breather caps that make a mess. It could also be blocked off. The base has no sharp bends in the stamping, its all fairly smooth curves, so air should flow fairly well over it, compared to alot of aftermarket drop-base air cleaners.

This one came from 'Corvette Central' and cost me about $110 + the ride. It came with a new base, chrome lid, wingnut, and 14x3 AC Delco air filter element. Even though its listed in their catalog as 'foreign made' all of these parts are very high quality. I was quite impressed with what I got, and I'm picky with this stuff.

Here are some pics I took when I got it today, so you can see for yourself how this air cleaner fits on a generic Holley carb (will also work with Quadrajets and Edelbrocks). VERY nice piece IMO... might even be able to use my Holley 300-36 intake with this.

    Here are the pics:

Been using this same L88 Corvette assembly air cleaner and T/A intake on my 71 for over 4+ years with Bulldog heads. For those who don't know Bulldogs are .300" higher than stock for a raised intake port just like TE's, but are machined to accept any standard BBB intake.

    A 3 " element works fine. Mine even works with a 3.5" K&N.

    Hi Jim,

I have used BSR performance for their spun Aluminum Air cleaner base. They make a few in 16" to clear the Holley bowls. In 4150 and dominator bases. I have fit the dominator base under a stock hood on my street car.
Part # scp.ac601.B Is a 4150 base with a 2" drop. They are spun aluminum and very light and trick. Their phone # is 800-432-2798. There website does not show a picture but call and they are very helpful.

I think the K&N FlowControl cleaner drops at least as much as the 'vette air cleaner in the pics. Plus check out how much smoother the transition is from the filter lip to the carburetor:

The main reason i posted that, was because obviously the L88 cleaners are scarce, so now an aftermarket source (or two) is available.

Also, just to demonstrate how big the drop actually is, compared to a 1.25" drop base, which is what most people have.

    Jim,
What did you end up doing to solve the problem of hood clearance using the TA TE/SP2/holley/stock GS hood combination?? :Do No:

The lowest air cleaner dropbase I've found was about 2 1/4".

    Thanks

    Hello Bill Senior,

    That was for my car.

We didn't use it cause the Airhorns of the Holley carb are touching the glassfiber hood.
I need to get a Stage 2 scoop to get enough clearance for an aircleaner and to get some fresh air forced in the carb.

My glassfiber hood is soft on the inside so I could remove some material where the airhorns touched. They do no touch anymore but its close!
