I haven't, but an old friend of mine called me to say she had watched an episode and thought of me. After living with me for two years, she got to know me pretty well. She said "All I could think of was what would happen if they took your car. You'd kill them"

Apparently, they 'steal' your car (Actually, to me it's theft, even if it's for a joke or whatnot, so there you go), and re-do the car...I assume it's vaguely the way the owner might want it, but who can tell? The owner ain't there to give input. The owner, you know, the guy that owns the car?

That got me thinking about what would happen if I was 'chosen' to 'star' on overhaulin.

Firstly, they'd never be able to steal the car without me knowing they were doing it, The street I live on makes that impossible.

Second thing, I'd be outside with a baseball bat, going for the kneecaps

Thirdly, if somehow I was away and they got the car (I wouldn't leave it in my neighborhood), when the car came back, I would punch the host squarely in the face on national TV and then sue them for theft of my vehicle (emotional distress, cost of replacement transportation). I would never speak to the "friends" who set up the whole thing, ever again.

Npw you might be thinking "yeah right, you'd love it"

Well, you don't *quite* know me then.

I can't beleive any real car guy would enjoy that

    first off

Well, keep in mind that they have an insider (such as spouse, parent, best friend, etc) that is working in kahoots (splg) with them - they seem to usually have a good idea from the insider what the "dream" of the car owner is for the particular car. For the most part, the cars I have seen them do are very tasteful and done wwith lots of thought and planning. I am a "original" type guy but some of the cars I have seen them do could sit in my garage any day - although the 67 Skylark they did sucked. PLUS - even if you don;t like it, it still a whole lot nicer than it was when they started and you would still have more to work with when you wanted to "change" it. Chill out guy, it's a TV show!!!!

So you're saying that if you saw three guys with a flatbed swiping your car, you'd be diplomatic?

I don't think so. Hey, I'm being honest here. If you saw that, you'd do something about it, too, and it wouldn't be, "I say, folks, there seems to be a mistake here"

You'd say, "HEY MOTHER%#^#&! GET AWAY FROM THAT CAR OR NAME YOUR NEXT OF KIN!" and then if they didn't, you'd hurt them

I'm not ashamed to say that I really think that a lot of people need an @sskicking nowadays, for their benefit and for everyone else's too. Folks hide behind a lot of stuff.

Used to be that you didn't mess with a man's car, girl, or dog, and not necessarily in that order. But now? It's no big deal to key somebody's car, or cheat on your spouse, or even to steal somebody's dog, because there's no fear of immediate bodily injury.

See, we call that "wong" nowadays, and it makes me sick. I call it "protecting what is mine". All sorts of people get off legal charges because they were 'victimised' while perpetrating a crime. Well, whoop-de-doo, they shouldn't have been doing it in the first place. Now if you hit a burglar over the head with a frying pan HE can sue YOU? That's why you should shoot him dead and then say "I was in fear for my life"

I cannot beleive you'd take this sort of thing sitting down, Keith. I can't beleive any Man would, although I guess since I'm the type of guy who tells his neighbors that leaning on their car horn for 15 minutes at 3 am is not behavior I will continue to ignore, I'm not quite a New Millenium type of person.

I'll tell you what, if I saw somebody taking your car without your permission, I'd break their legs, too

I'm being honest here, I'm not trying to get a feel-good from the community over this. I'm saying I can't beleive that they get away with swiping the car

They totally redo a car with new custom interior, killer sound system, new suspension (usually from Hotchkis), all new brakes (usually from Baer), body is completely redone and rust replaced with metal. Also new engine/trans/drivetrain is replaced.

A totally custom paint job is laid out by Chip Foose (Foose Wheels). This is all done in 7 days.

They don't restore the car, but they do make an excellent street cruiser out of it. Any of the cars they did probably do great at the local cruise-ins or shows.

They even did a show where they brought back some cars they'd done over the last year and they all still looked great and performed well. I love the show. I wish they'd take my car and put a paint job and new interior in it. Heck, I'd even take a modern stereo system too.

They are on TLC channel. Here's a link to their website:

That's great...but I'd hate it. I don't want somebody else to write checks to fix my car. i want to say "yeah, I did the engine, I put in that suspension, I spent 200 hours block sanding. See that ripple? I wish I'd seen that before paint. Yeah, I put in that cam, i like it. The headers were a tight fit, but if you do this that and the other thing, it will work"

I couldn't stand it. It wouldn't be my car anymore, and that would make me very mad. I'd sell it and buy another one, and hate doing it, but I wouldn't stand to look at the car that had once truly been mine, and was now antiseptically 'perfect' as if a magic wand hand been tossed at it. I spent a lot of time on my car, and it's with some pride that I've learned a few things. They would be taking that away from me. Without that, it may as well be a 2005 Honda for all I'd care

    It's TV

Chris, IT"S A TV SHOW ! ! ! Not your local thugs taking it to strip and sell. I would have to assume the "insider" has to sign a waiver taking full responsibility for it. Plus, who know's, maybe these cars where entered to be candidates for this show by the owner - IT"S TV

You're taking this awfully personally, Keith. I've got the guts to actually relate what I'd do if i saw somebody swiping my car, and that's what they puport to do. I'm not looking to have you say "yeah, right on, brother" to me. I know it;'s a TV, you think maybe I'm an idiot? I know you don't. But this would be my reaction. Stealing my car means the theives are in immediate and serious danger

Maybe they could rig it so that they just take the body off my car and fix that? That I'd like. But not the stealing part. They would have to get me in on it. If not...They'd better have a sniper with a tranquilizer gun loaded with grizzly tranks, or somebody would be getting a visit from the tooth fairy

Funny you should say that...I'm wrestling with the tax forms today. they should owe me big time, what with the taxes I had to shell out last year in a lump sum and the car I donated to charity. Makes me nearly as mad as somebody swiping somebody else's car

So what do they do on this show? Alert the cops, family, neighbors, friends, etc, that they are 'stealing' the vehicle? I'd love to see the out-takes from that show. Somebody got sorry they pulled that stunt, I reckon.

then how do you rely on these guys to do the job right? Sure they are pros. I have dealt with tons of 'em. I don't trust one mother's son until they show me why they should be trusted. I know exactly one painter that I trust- he told me flat out he couldn't do the job I wanted and why. I talked with him for 20 minutes in his office and he knew he wasn't getting a dime. that guy, I would trust. he could've just sprayed it and never told me why it would be a problem later on, and he would have had his money

But imagine that? they send your 455 block out to the local place to get done, and they tolerance it like a Chevy? Ooooo, that would be stellar. or they slap a carb that would be big enough for a Chevy on it? Wouldn't even come to that. They'd have to mace me, and afterwards, they'd have to be really quiet so I couldn't locate them by the sound of their heartbeats

I've seen a few episodes. Cars they " borrow" tend to be worn out with too many miles & an owner who just doesn't have the $$ to restore/repair it. Overall, some initial shock but in the end a very happy owner. Some of the work they do doesn't suit my taste, but that's what makes this hobby so universal.

If they think they could fix the rust on my car, then I would hand it over without a word spoken. A lot of my people who really know me, if they told them to fix it like my dream car, I would let overhaulin take over, because I know that the people who know me know I love buick power, so I wouldn't have to worry about a chevy motor.

They did a buick skylark and they put a chevy motor in it. Its like if they take my mopar and put a 360 or 383 mopar motor I will be happy cause its mopar but not a chevy motor.

They can come get one of my cars anytime they want. Hell if anyone on here would like to put my name in to the show to get my car on there feel free.

Sure they could come get my car, and then I could sell the 20 inch rims, 1000 watt stereo system, dvd players, ps2's, gay interior. And use the free money to get the rest of the stuff it really needs. Works out just great for me. And like Lance couldn't afford to fix his car up! :Dou:

Don't be surprise if someday very soon your car is missing. I think we can arrange this.

Baseball bat, kneecaps; we want to see this! You're being OVERHAULED!

More than likely the owner knows what is going on and has given them full written permission on it. The show "Trading Spaces" has a whole crew who does the house, the couples just do a few scenes for the camera to add drama to whats going on. Its all fake I'm sure, the plan to steal the car, the actual "theft", the rest of the story and inner tension, and most importantly the look on the car owners face when they get it back. Why do I say that? Because there are too many trigger happy car owners that would go out and search for whom ever stole their car or whom they assume might have done it. "Well Billy Bob always eyeballed my car he musta stolen it, I'm gonna put some buckshot in his keyster". "Oh surprise hunny your car got Overhauled". "Wait so he didn't steal it.......ah **** woops I killed my own brother cause I thought he took it." And you could imagine the controversy that would cause, which is why networks create "fake drama" in "reality" tv shows. Look at Pro wrestling.
