this is the only one of these shifters i have ever seen. anyone have one of these? http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/RARE...014QQitemZ330284132541QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW i think this one is correct for 71 and maybe 72 big buicks. mine is for a 73 and maybe a 72 (that 72 area is kinda gray to me until i can dig out and double check my master parts book some day). mine has the words "wash/wipe" press moulded into it. these shifters will also fit a 74 but they wont fit a 75 & 76 because the dash sticks out too much. if anyone has a 73 service manual, i would appreciate a nice digital photo of the schematic and related parts.... and how it might connect to a delay wiper system.
Yeah, pretty rare option. For Centurions, only just over 13% of 1971 convertibles were ordered with this option. 8% of the 71 Coupes got it, and even less for the 4 doors.
I'll definitely keep my eye out... There seem to be a lot of 73's for sale most of the time, but nice 71 and 72's are fairly hard to come-by.

My '71 Electra has this option. Its pretty cool. :bglasses: :grin: However, mine has writing on the chrome portion of the gear shift lever. It works too. The only bad things with that auction is it is incomplete. The wiring, wiper switch in dash and motor are different....i think. It's been awhile since I looked at the service manual. I have the dealership pamphlet too. That single button in the lever has three different functions. I'll get you guys some pictures of a working setup tomorrow. :beers2: There was a '73 Riviera for sale at the Auburn car corral that had the wiper demand option this summer. Yuk, I'll get you some pictures.
mine has three wires(two functions) ... one wire feeds both switches and one wire triggers the "mist" wipe and one more wire that when you push the switch in further is used to trigger the washers. the shifter can be added without column removal with a lot of patience and a little skill. i think the plug on the end is the same one they used for the cruise wiring from the turn signal lever.... mine looks just like it. in all my 74 books and stuff not a word is mentioned about this being a 74 option. i think i paid under 20 bux for mine. thanks for any pix.
My '73 Electra has one of these, with the Wash Wipe stamp. To install this option all you need is the lever and the cable that connects it to the wiper switch. The cable that goes with it is plugged in between the wiper switch and the existing wiper plug wiring. It has a plug identical to the existing one for the switch and a socket to match the existing plug. I don't think the wiper motor is different, there is no delay system involved in mine. On page 25 in my owners manual it say's: First detent - one cycle wipe of windshield wiper. Second detent - washer fluid squirted on windshield and wiped dry automatically. Wich is exacly how it workes on mine.
my reference to the delay wiper system is that my 74 vert has delay wipers, but it still has the mist selection also. if i decide to use the shifter button for its intended purposes, making the jumper harness would be simple from what you explained. i have extra switches and harnesses for donor parts to complete the jumper. it sounds like it just taps into the mist and wash wires and feeds them from its own feed.. . . . . . it almost sounds TOO easy...ray:
Frank, I just saw a nice '75 LeSabre convertible on a classic car sales lot in St Petersburg on 54th Ave. It is that nice burgundy red color with a white top. I could check it out on my next trip there. Ted
This is exactly what I thought to myself when I was assembling the instrument cluster in my Electra last summer. If you have the lever, making the jumber cable is dead simple, given you have a donor harness to work with. I've checked the wiring diagram in the Service manual and this option is not described there. I've checked my pictures from the restoration process and found one that shows this cable dangling from the instrument panel. It's not very good, harness is out of focus. It's not on the net so I can't post it but if you PM me your mail address you're welcome to it.

I'm pretty sure that the wiper motor was different. At least, I had to mod mine (the switching bits under the cover) to get the demand to work. I picked up a turn-signal lever with a pushbutton in the end of it for mine. iirc it came out of an Olds.
