Hello guys! Before starting I apologize if this isn't the right category for posting this but I wasn't sure about where should I open this thread. My 70 GS has his stock exhaust setup, some of it isn't in great shape but what I really don't like is that the car doesn't has a "cool" sound. The exhaust is very quiet and only makes a noticeabl sound revving the engine, I'm looking to change the mufflers for some with a deep tone sound but nothing too loud to piss off the neighbors or be uncomfortable while driving and speaking. The first thing that came to my mind were Flowmaster mufflers but I have a pair of super 44 Flowmasters in my Plymouth Fury 360 and I like the deep tone from them but don't like they are too loud. I've always read that Magnaflow has a way better quality and sound than Flowmaster but I've been checking Magnaflow's website and don't have idea how to search for them mufflers series Any recommendation?
I like going to you tube and googling the car and year and you will see different videos and examples
I like the Dynomax Super Turbo mufflers. Good throaty sound without being too obnoxious but noticeable when you get on it. Got mine from Summit Racing.
So your 1970 car has the stock exhaust system? Are you sure? The car is nearly 50 years old, have you owned it for that long? The stock head pipes are 2 1/4”, and the tail pipes are 2”? That is stock. That’s probably not what you have, but if it is, we need to know unless you plan to upgrade and replace the whole system. In any case, we need to know what you have before making any specific recommendations. For 2 1/2” systems, it is hard to beat the Walker 17749 muffler.
Too many people obsess over which muffler makes the "nicest" sound. They'd be better-off building a more-powerful engine, and let the engine determine the sound rather than the muffler. Put another way: A "Hot-Rod" exhaust/muffler on a stock engine sounds like crap. A mild-tone exhaust/muffler OF SUFFICIENT DIAMETER on a performance engine is very pleasing. I'm not saying the muffler/exhaust system is unimportant, or that it doesn't affect the sound--but a powerful engine exhaling through a suitable exhaust system just sounds different from a stocker exhaling through the same system. Same thing goes for camshafts. Thumpr-style cams with deliberate rough idle on otherwise stock or near-stock engines, (without the true power (compression?) of a "built" engine) are a readily-identified by people with experience as a "cheat". They're only fooling the people who can't tell the difference...and who cares about fooling them? Might as well ground one plug wire and pretend you've got major engine upgrades.
Our 60's cars and I were contemporaries. The prowling grounds were the local drive-ins.My memory is,for the most part, not of any specific exhaust note. That said, for whatever reason,I can remember being behind a cruising '67 442 that sounded SO good that it has stuck with me. Can still hear it echoing in the canyons of my mind when the topic of mufflers, etc arises. An automatic w/resonators? I dunno, but it was righteous!
I used the walker 17749 for years when I had 2 1/2" exhaust. When I went to 3" exhaust, I wanted something that had a nice rumble and was relatively quiet at cruise, but screamed when you got on it, like the 17749. I settled on the Magnaflow 14264. https://www.summitracing.com/parts/mpe-14264
I agree with the Walker recommendation. If you need side in/side out, get the 17749. If you need side/center, it’s 17748. The exhaust TA sells calls for side/center. I had that installed yesterday with the ‘48s and it fits, looks and sounds great. Patrick
It’s funny-I took my own mufflers and exhaust to the shop (which is a Flowmaster dealer) and the guy looked at the mufflers and warned me that they’d be really quiet! I guess he’s used to what most of his customers ask for. He did say the TA kit fit a lot better than the Flowmaster kits most guys bring. Patrick
I have Dynomax on the Wagon and Flowmaster 40s on the Stage 1 car. I like the Flowmasters a lot more than the Dynomax. Just MHO.
Ok if you need to change all the exhaust system go with Gardner exhaust they have stock muffler or deeper tone ones. The quality is bar none.Always put there concours package on all the cars I have restored everything fits and the sound is great IMO. Alain
I believe Gardner also has bigger systems as well. Cause 2 1/4" headpipes and 2" tailpipes ain't even adequate for a COMPLETELY stock 455 Stage1, just sayin.
I've tried lots of mufflers and you you want best flow/performance with no drone you can't beat the Walker UltraFlo.
Well, “there’s an ass for every seat.” I love it, and get compliments at every cruise night and show. Just offering a suggestion along with a sound clip.
