It's great that GV is helping you work thru this problem. Kudos to them! It seems like such a shame that this all came about because of a converter swap... It's either something minor or just a ridiculous coincidence.
Yes, I like the idea of them checking it over after 13 years. Can't imagine how the converter swap had anything to do with it. Mike seems to think it is just stuck. We joked that it will probably be fine when it gets there, all that bouncing around between NY and California.
well, the GV should get delivered tomorrow, so I should know something shortly after that. I was under the car today cleaning up the gasket surface. I've been reading the GV instruction manual. They mention shimming the GV coupler so that it is close to even with the gasket surface. I put a straight edge across the gasket surface and there is about .125" to the coupler. Pulled the coupler out and there are no shims at all. Specs in the GV instruction manual call for .005-.035. I definitely have more than that. I transferred the GV unit from my SP transmission about 3 years ago and the GV worked fine all that time. I think I would have remembers if any shims dropped out.
Those shims are very critical on the install...Did you install it on your SP? The shims very between each transmission.. Not just model.. Even had to shave a tail shaft once.. I've read about guys pulling units from wreaking yards and killing them because no shims..
Yeah, but it worked for 3 years. I did not do the install on the SP. I did transfer it from the SP though. Like I said, I would have seen it if the shims dropped out. Again, it worked fine for 3 years. All I did was change the flex plate and converter.
I'm hoping it its something very simple.. Just take a very good look at the coupling and get shims.. The GVs from wreaking yards that I read about were on truck forums.... Heavy loads... Your 70GS is light.
When they return it to me, I've been promised a package of shims, new gasket and fasteners. I hope it is simple as well, but whatever it is, it is getting fixed.
Well, my GV is on the way back to me. They told me that when it got there it worked for a short time, and then quit. It wasn't building pressure. They replaced all the o rings and the clutch, and resealed it. I also had them install the extended pan for more fluid capacity. They said it was perfect after that. Will get a package of shims as well as new safety nuts for the reinstall. Total bill with everything and shipping BOTH ways was 458.00. I'm satisfied with that. I asked them about the lack of shims and the consensus was it could have contributed to my problems. I asked them about the shimming procedure. I was told to put the straightedge across with the gasket installed on the adapter. That is not what I see in the directions. It looks as if the straight edge goes across the bare gasket surface of the adapter. Anyone have any input on that?
UPS delivery says Thursday. Hope I get it early so I can have the car ready for the Friday cruise night.
