Rusty, where was the break in the axle? Near the outer hub or way inside by the side gears? Any problems getting the old broken piece out? Lucky that wasn't a C clip axle or you'd be changing at least a quarter panel right now, too.

The first 3 shots are of the left axle. It appears that it was a quick break. The last shot is of the right axle with the splines twisting.

I was thinking about how lucky I was to have the bolt in axles!!!!!:eek2:

Jeremy McNicol We had a good time

Rusty last pic looks like the left I took out before Martin. I told Yvonne it would be a quick and cheap gear swap. Ended up upgrading to 30 spline.

Friends and family had fun with all the rear end jokes, Yvonne not so much.

Being a small block owner, I have two questions:

    1) What is this "torque" thing you are talking about?

    2) Is that what happens when you take an Olds over 4000rpm???

    See ya in September!:beers2:

    4000? That's where the power band starts on a W31 small block...same for 302 Z28's.........

Sorry Dave. I should have stipulated that 4000 rpm limit was for the 455. My 340 starts to wake up around 4000 as well. If you bring your '66 this year, then you are out of the Small Block Club. :puzzled: :puzzled: Hmmmm, wait a minute.....that would make it the SBC and I can't have any association with those three letters under the hood of my Dodge. :puzzled: :puzzled:

Go figure. My 400 is a big block, but an Olds 403 is a small block. :laugh:66 won't be out this year......again.

    all this talk of rpm's

My big block wakes up around 3000-3500 and pulls to about 6000.

buddy of mine with a 70 442 4sp car snapped an axle right at the splines ((at US 41 no less .... both times). Had a hell of a time getting the small piece out one time. No more slicks at US 41 for that car. Eventually he's going to redo the car and come out to play with us.

Are you saying that rumors of Pure Stockers gathering around the charcoal grill singing Kum-Ba-Yah are not true?

When I had the 3.23 rear end of my W-30 apart, the pinion shaft showed much more twist than the axles. Fortunately, that got replaced with the gear swap to 3.90.

I parked both of the 3.90 Olds 12 bolts and put Chev 12 bolts in both the Ramrod and the 66. Trade off between breaking an axle that's near impossible to find parts to fix (The Olds) with a C clip potential problem....If I ever run slicks and launch hard again (which I doubt), I'd have better axles put in with the C clip eliminator kits.
