I think you got it backwards Pat. Buick came first so the ricers are copying it. Can't let that stop us from using it.

BTW, that pic looks like an automotive mullet. Chevy in the front, Buick in the rear...:error: :eek2: :puzzled:

Well, anyway, I ordered the 2" tall filter element from Summitt today to put in my drop base, K&N filter top cleaner. It was $27.

I like the stage 2 scoop. But our car looks so nice, I hate to start swapping out body panels and painting. Besides, all our money now will be going to the convertible project.

Why stop @ a chevy hood might aswell put a 454 in it so it runs like a chevy :Dou:. I'd run no hood over chevy parts on my car anyday.

No offense, but with all those goodies hanging down below the bumper I hope you never get rear-ended!!! Having had a hand in OEM fuel system safety during crash events for the last 14 years, this just makes me cringe and look away. Based on the DOT tires and plate, I'm guessing this car will be on the street.

Devon, This is a strictly strip car. I have less worries about getting rear-ended than hitting something head-on. I have all glass doors, fenders, hood, bumpers, decklid, aluminum radiator,so there will be more problems going forward. If I tear the fuel system off,I guess if I live through the fire,I will be happy that my car is capable of huge wheelstands.
The car is set up for a 12 point cage and I'll be adding door bars in case of a little(or big) incident at the track. The tires are drag radials that most likely be sold soon for slicks and the plate is an actual plate that was on my 73 GS 10 years ago. We now have a white with blue and yellow plate. I thought it looked cool,so I added it on the car. My fuel system will also be upgraded soon to a 8 gallon fuel cell with roll over valve installed.Just trying to have a little wintertime fun..

Ummmm.I have a BUICK cowl fiberglass hood..Not a Chevelle one..They bust my bunions about the cowl hood looking too much like a Chevelle hood, but I promise you,it's a Buick Skylark/GS glass hood...

when you go to the track you may want to try it with and without the air cleaner set-up. you really need 3" or more of clearance above the top of the carb. please post your results with the new intake i'm thinking about trying that intake also.

I diddnt think it had to be said....but no- I dont run the air cleaner on the track, hell it sucks on the street- but not as bad as all the West Texas dirt in the air!!!

Carman ...I went through this with my 65 -455- SP1 which is probably worse than your body style as far as hood clearance...here is what worked for me...you could probably fit a thicker filter on than me too ...I didnt have enough airflow - had choking trying to run a 2" filter and K+N Style flow through top - your car combo is hotter than mine and I am pretty sure a 2" filter is going to be detrimental to your setup ...my flow through top had a gigantic plastic button in the center that obstructed airflow big time above the venturis - the car simply wouldnt run and choked -sputtered under heavy acceleration ..........Final solution in "my 65" was - all from Summit

We have always run the air cleaner at the track. Ran it both ways before and has same track time. Now, I am sure we will tak it off to get more air access.

Here is what I know so far. We live in the country, on a long paved road and no houses near by. Tyler (my son) always does a "test" launch in front of our house to check everything out. Without a burnout, it would leave about 2' of marks on the road in the old set up, in street trim which is mufflers, full air in tires, etc. With the intake change, he is leaving a mark well in to second gear. I know it's not scientific, and the track time will tell, but this motor sure seems to like the SPX. I'm a little worried about traction now with the M/T pros, but we will see. Hopefully this next weekend we can make it to Abilene for the last race of the year.

And? Which aircleaner did you finally use and worked good for you?

Let me know, I will have my new engine shipped any day now and could have the same fitment problems like you.

I'm actually still looking for a lid. Probably will buy a Mr. Gasket 14"

We have the 2" deep drop base and 3" air cleaner now with a large chrome top from 68 GS. It fits underneath the hood fine. The K&N filter top is too thick.

For those that wanted to know the results of the SPX swap. We picked up almost 3 tenths in the 8th mile!!!! And half of that was in 60' time.

Hood clearance is a big problem when you go to the tall manifolds. Some cars are OK and some are not. Go figure.

I am going to try this with my Procharger project. Would this not also work for a remote air cleaner mount for a regular carb setup? Supposed to be 2 1/2 inches tall.
