I would ante if a fair number of Board members would do likewise.

    I'm in, you know that!

Hopefully, the iterations would cross the current state of my motor at some point. It would be interesting to see what mods would get the most for a "resto HP" motor, as you've called it.

i'd be interested as we'll would be nice to have some good combo data

what would you be testing for?

    Jim,

What exactly would you be testing? I'm just a little confused? If the engine is to be stock appearing (intake and heads are both stock), what else is there to test?

    stock vs ported head?
    small valve vs big valves?
    stock intake vs ported intake?
    stock cam vs different cams?
    cam profile and timing?
    stock vs ported exhaust manifold?

I'm just curious what data you are looking for? What other "tricks" am I overlooking?

Yes Brett, that exactly what we would test.. the interaction of various mods.. how much exactly are STG 1 Valves, with no porting worth.. ect ect..

I have a few sets of heads to play with.. stock small valve, Street strip ported small valve (the level 1 heads), stock STG 1, and fully ported stg 1's.

And different cam grinds with each.. More duration, less duration, centerline changes, installed at different ILC's ect..

All testing will be with the iron manifold (ported and unported) and ported and unported exhaust manifolds.

The point is to figure out the best combo with a restoration motor.. AKA "Restoration HP" motor. Trying to nail down idle quality and power charictaristics, with a few different combos that work, so folks doing resto motors have some good data to consider.

PS... your up to bat now in the engine room Brett.. should finish it when I get back from my FLA trip, in early January.

    Sorry Mr. Lore,
I'm the level 1A motor Jim was referring to. I believe he wanted to use the iron headed level 1 motor. If that weren't the case, I may have been interested. Afterall, it's all in the name of science :Smarty: .

    Short Block Only

We just need to borrow your short block for a few test pulls. You keep your heads on the side lines. If we break it JW can fix it. Just ask him.

Hey JL.. your awful free spending with my money... :)

But seriously, Brett's shortblock is already zero decked, and since I know this is a big issue with the resto crowd, we need to do one test with the pistons down the hole like they normally would be.

I think I have a fully assembled candidate in the shop here.. just have to talk to it's owner and see if he will ok us to play with it.

    Jim,
I'm in for $100 as well. How would you want to transfer the funds? PayPal? Also waiting to see if there will be some emergency relief collections for those poor people hit with the tsunamis. Still waiting to find our about some of my guys vacationing in Thailand right now, the phones are down.

Hold up with the money.. let's get a game plan in place first. Once we get that testing plan in place, then we can see if we can raise the money. We will do it with commitments first, and then the actual dollars. Once I have secured the motor to play with, and we raise the funds, then we will get the parts and schedule the dyno time.

    Guys,

Give me some ideas on what cams you want to see tested. We will be using the Stock STG 1 cam as a baseline reference.

For this type of motor, cam has to make 12" or more of vacuum, and idle with no more than a very mild lope.

So we are talking about cams with less than 10* of @ .050 overlap.

For your reference, Ken's cam is a 230/240 @.050, on a 114 LCA and idles with 15" of vacuum.

Also, anyone have a set of Greg's street-strip or competition ported manifolds sitting around, that they would loan us for the test. I'm sure Greg would do us a fresh set, but no need to bother him if we could find a set already done.

How much would an experiment like this cost? would think we might be just talking about Jim's time (which we all know is free anyway :eek2: ) and some parts. I think between the members of the group we probably all have one of everything laying around in our garages. might even be interesting for some of us to show up in the great white north to help out and donate some of our time. if we do that maybe we should wait till spring don't to have to take a snow mobile from hotel to the shop.

I am planning on sending Greg my 67 manifolds to have them fully ported. i could lend those to the project.

Oh come on you So Cal wimp... it was balmy today.. must have been about 20*...

But yes, come on up.. could use a couple guys (3 at the most) when we do the tests.

Also, my dyno shop is installing web cams.. so if they have that up and running by the time we do this, a whole lot of you can watch..

PS... Jerry, your parcels will arrive in the AM.. went out ok on your account.

Mmnnn.. the RH one would be ok.. but the LH is a special '67 only deal.. which couild be interesting to see if that manifold makes any more HP than the later versions with the depression between 5 and 7 does. We will need a set of 68-76 ones also.. or at least the LH side..

    new developments..

Spoke with the board member here (Larry Distefano) who has a motor here for a resto project.. it was built by Mike Phillips down at AMP, and Larry is going to fax me the paperwork on it, so we can see if it is "stock enough" to use for our testing. He is willing to let us play with it.

Also spoke with Mike @TA Perf. this afternoon, he is willing to give us a super deal on camshafts/lifters and even has the blueprints for the factory STG 2 cam, which may or may not be of use for us. I think it might be a little "too healthy" for our purposes here, but we will see.

BTW Ken.. when I told him about your motor, his response was "boy that's pretty good for what your working with there"... so maybe I am just too used to the aluminum headed animals that are "the norm" around here these days.

    Cam Ideas?

    Jim,
The guidelines you laid out are what I'm interested in but I don't know enough about cams to make a recommendation. Mild lope with 12"+ vacuum. Is anyone interested in looking into a motor that is designed specifically for 87 octane? I've read some interesting articles on engines built for low octane recently. I am certainly open to any and all options.
I'd love to come help out, maybe when I retire in '09. Right now current world events have me very busy and I'm stationed in Japan so its a bit of a trip for me. Would love to watch some on the web cam though.
Thanks to Larry Distefano for offering his engine, I hope it'll work out for us. Thanks to Mike for helping out with the cams and lifters.
Thanks to the Bald Menace for offering up the manifolds.
We're gaining some steam already. I love this community.
Jim, do you think we should slide this string of messages to a new thread with a subject line that may interest some of our brothers who haven't read this yet?
