I thought I'd throw a poll up to see how content people are here with their work lives. I have a good job, but lately I feel like I don't have much left at the end of the day. It's been so demanding and stressful it really makes you think twice about whether it's worth it. I definitely need a vacation! (Salem around the corner!)

So, how would you rate your current job? What techniques do you use to deal with stress? (The long smoky burnout is obvious) :)

I love my full time job, I hate my part time pay.

I'm a Radio DJ, I make less than 15g US a year. That said, I sit in an air conditioned booth and talk into a can, while sitting down. And when I misspeak 40 000 people hear me.

When you own the company, theres nobody to blame but yourself if you dont have a good day.

I cant complain, it's provided all I need, a garage full of Buicks.
    :beer

The only regret, is the time it took in the first 3 years, of working 6-7 days a week, and 12-14 hours a day where I couldnt spend time with my family. That and the fact that we were dead flat broke for the first year.

Ditto Mark's comments above except I had anticipated starting my own business and had tucked away a stash so I doidn't have to worry about the startup cashflow.

Something must have been wrong when you started your business Mark. I was one of the owners in a company for almost 20 years and the employees thought the owners job was to drive the company truck to the bank to deposit the checks that came in the mail each day. I remember it the way you put it, lots of long days and short weekends watching them make more money than me. When it turned around and made me good money I was so sick of listening to them that I sold out to start another company with no employees. Now I have the best job on earth and no one to complain about how little I do and how much I make, other than my wife. I plan to never go back to having employees, what a pain in the butt. I am now friends with a lot of my old employees, they do still complain about the owners it just doesn't bother me anymore. Self employment can be the best work there is, it just doesn't fit everyone.

I work in a garage that is stuck in 1979,and get paid ten bucks an hour.I love working on cars, and the satisfaction when they leave repaired is great.

Just sick and tired of not having any say or control in what goes on,it is just me and my boss, and he trusts me to a certain extent, but I would trade it all away tommorrow if I could start my oewn buisness.Maybe two or three employees and that is about it.Just something I would enjoy, but give me enough freedom to spend the time with my sons and maybe travel a little.

    Plus have my toys.

I love my job. Im surrounded by cars and mechanics all day. I'm a field service technician for Snap On Tools. I get to install, repair and upgrade Snap On equipment. I especially like setting up new aligners. Its kinda like Christmas, you get to unwrap everything, set it up, play with it and not have to pay for it. Plus, I get to poke around old repair shops all day. Its amazing all the cool old stuff you find. I get a kick out of talking to the old timer mechanics. I work out of my house. I make my own hours. I get a new Ford van, a cell phone I dont have to pay for. They give me a gas card and Im left alone all day. And the best part?? They actually pay me for this! I guess it helps when your an incurable car-a-holic.

    Kieth,
How are you buddy, havent talked to you since Nationals in Flint. I hope all is well for you.

And yes, the start up was rough, and like you we had stashed back about a years income to cover us in those lean times. WE didnt do too many extra things untill the company started really rolling.

Take care, and keep in touch.

    Dennis,
I know the situation well, last year at bonus time, a couple of employees got a little too greedy and thought I owed them the world because they are here every day. One even demanded a raise of $20,000/year. Last I heard, he was working at a lawn landscaping company. There are days that I truley believe that if I didnt have employees, I wouldnt have any problems. But, that is unrealistic. Seems like they forget easily who has to pay for all of their mistakes, the wrecked truck, the broken pumps because nobody checked the oil level ,on annd on.

My job was pretty much fun for the first few years, but now the company I work for is trying to save money by doubling up the work load. 2 of us do the work of 3 now. Now I get every other weekend off, but the odd weekends I have to cover 2 sales areas. That means twice the work and miles. We saved the company @20k by doing this!!!! We each got a 3k per year raise!!!! 6k for us, 14k for them and they don't do any extra work. Hmmmmm. Plus they will usually have a meeting every other month, not close to home either. They are pretty much mandatory. It takes an act of GOD for them to excuse you from any meetings. Maybe time to change jobs.

I am one of those fortunate folks that truely loves his job. I work from home so the commute is easy. I have turned down 2 promotions in the past couple of years because it would have meant having to commute into the main office or move to a different area. Got it good and gonna stay put:TU:

When I started my current job the doctors told me to find a sitdown job or they would have to cut my left leg off at the knee. Well 7 years later still have my leg and the job but it is very boring and dull. After the first million ranges go by what is the point. I work for Whirlpool here in Tulsa. We build gas and electric ranges to the tune of 5800-6200 per day! Yes that means every 22 seconds or so a completed range comes off the line boxed and ready to go. The only good thing about this job is the 4-10 yeap Mon - Thur. 5:30-4:00 Yes a three day weekend is a good thing.

Well, I used to work in Hell, but I was expected to RUN the place in addition to being tormented there. I have a few friends who still work there and they say they don't even know what their boss (AKA El Diablo) DOES or when el monstra does it.

Now I work about 20 yards away from there, and let me tell you, 20 yards away from Niflheim, and I can't even smell the brimstone.

    This is an easy one.

Rent a small workspace in another town, where you have a few friends. Put a car there.

Every weekday morning at 8, roll out of bed. Say that you are going to your part-time workplace. Then go to your shop and work on the car if you want to.

Jeez, I am not a good influence

I checked the box that said 8 to 5, even though my easy government job is actually 8 to 4 ! The thing I like best about my job is that it gives me 4 weeks vacation, 14 holidays, 15 sick days, and 3 personal days, each and every year! That's why I can make it to every Buick event I want, instead of having to pick and choose like some of my buddies do. I've been working for the County for almost 16 years and, as long as my luck holds out, I'll retire in 14 years and 10 months. I don't love my job, but I sure don't hate it. Suffice to say that I'm happy with the situation and the fact that doing the things that are important to me while I'm away from work makes it worth it to go to work in the first place. I'll never get rich doing my job, but I don't need to be rich to do what I like to do. (race my Buick!) I couldn't do what you "self-employed, sacrifice the here-and-now for the future" guys do. I'm too interested in enjoying the ride all the way through, to work that hard for "someday". I respect the hell out you, but I wouldn't want to walk in your shoes for a minute! I've got a few friends who own their own businesses, so I know what you have to go through. I've seen their struggles and I want no part of it. My one friend does plumbing, heat, and A.C. and he NEVER gets a break. He makes LOTS of money, but he has no time to spend it and no time to enjoy himself. He's fond of saying "Don't worry about me. I'll be dead soon and then I can get a good long rest". I'm not cut out for that.
