I just realised: I've never owned a Chevy

I like plenty of Chevies. I would especially like a '70 Camaro or a '67 Camaro convertible. Then there's the list of Corvettes i want...

I've never owned one. I've had three Buicks, a Poncho, and an Olds. No Chevy. I'm finding it really odd that with the number of good performing and resonably priced Chevies out there, I've never had one ever:confused:

I went through a Chevy phase for awhile....

63 Impala (I'd give my "left one" to have this one back) :ball:
77 Monza Mirage (Yup.... there goes my "right one" too) :gt:
    80 Monza *tubbed & caged*
73 Olds Delta 88 Royale convertible with a SBC in it. :gt:
    77 Chevy truck
93 GMC 4x4 1/2 ton (my only "brand new" vehicle ever)
    87 GMC Jimmy
    "80-something" - Astrovan (for about 2 months)
    96 GMC Yukon 4x4

I won't go into the Fords and Mopars :Dou:

I think about the only brand I've never owned was a Pontiac... but I'd love to add a GTO to the stable some day!
    :Do No:

  3. I've owned 3, I believe.

My first car was a 73 Nova SS 350, from around 1980 to maybe 87. It was a poor substitute for my brother's 68 GS400 that I had wrecked.

I drove an 88 S10 4x4 Blazer for about 5 years too, with a decent 4.3 V6. Let me tell ya, replacing the O2 sensor on an annual basis was a real PITA. Man they are hard to get at on those things. I liked it otherwise.

Most recently, my wife's car from 92-99 was a 92 Corsica LT with the V6 option. This car defied all of the bad repair history associated with the Corsica/Beretta models.

I doubt I will own another Chevy though. If we ever buy a

car again for the family transportation, I'll be shopping for a 2-3 yr old Park Ave or LeSabre.

I've owned plenty of Chevies, from a 65 Impala SS with one of the last 409s to my current 70 Chevelle SS 396 (but I don't drive it every day like I do my Riv). However, I think I'm one of possibly only two people in the US who've never owned a Small Block Chevy powered anything!

    No Chevys in my closet.

I tell you, the '96 LeSabre the wife drives has been a great family car!

I think they should have made a wagon on that platform.

I can't remember the last Chevy my family drove....with the exception of the late 70'ss Monte Carlo my parents had years ago.

I drive a 2000 Chevy cargo van....it drives nice...except when the brakes are cold. It snaps my neck every morning when I move it around the parking lot.

I also have 2 Ford cargo vans that I drive regularly. Definitely good vans, for the abuse they go through. I can't tell you enough how hard it is to change the spark plugs in the 98 ford.:blast: :blast: :blast: :blast:

Anyone ever spent 6 hours changing spark plugs?

  8. Re: No Chevys in my closet.

I keep hinting about a Buick to my wife when the topic of replacing her 96 Grand Caravan comes up. But she really likes the ride height of a van for visibility in the winter when snow starts piling up on boulevards and by intersections. But when we head out of town, I'm the one who drives the van, and the leg and elbow room leaves much to be desired for my 6'4" frame. Especially when we do the all day drive to the Black Hills... I wouldn't mind a Roadmonster wagon

No, but I've spent a whole weekend changing oil once.... in my 73 Olds 'vert.....

I broke loose the drain plug to find that the nut had broke loose inside the pan. So the bolt and nut were spinning together, and I couldn't loosen it the rest of the way OR tighten it back up. I had to yank the engine and swap the oil pan.

Then (AFTER I got the engine back in the car) I found that the oil filter was siezed, and you crumple it with your filter wrench, then you jab a screwdriver through it, then the screwdriver just rips around it, then you chisel at the inner ring until it's finally out.

I have owned many in the past (mostly 69-72 chevy pickups, even had a 72 cheyenne with factory a/c)...current driver is a 97 Chevy silverado reg cab shortbox 5.7l, I love this truck. Not one problem, runs great, rides great, looks great, would buy another with no question.

My dad was a hardcore chevy guy until I got the Delta. His first car was a 60 bel air, then a 62 (his street racer for 8 years), a 69, and a 72 Nova 350 4BBL. I'd give my left one for the last 2. Oh, BTW, after these cars, he got heavily into Jeep.

2 Chevys, 1 GMC. A 75 Nova:Dou:, the wife's 93 Cavalier, and my workhorse, 69 GMC 3/4T 2-WD 350/T400 (original engine was a 307). Holley 600, Edelbrock Performer intake, Crane cam, headers, 3" exhaust in a stock 72 longblock out of a Chevy pickup. Second owner, it was ordered as a stripper, no options except heavy-duty suspension (read 1-TON suspension, Dana 60 w/ 4.?? gears:eek2: :jd: ) in the front and rear, heavy-duty battery, cooling, and power steering. That's it. No frills. Everything else is original.

Yeah, it might be a "chebbie", but GD it starts, runs, hauls anything I put in the bed!!:Brow:  I've been across scales carrying more wet sand, wet maple firewood, scrap metal, hauling car trailers, whatever, than the truck itself weighs!:Do No: :error:

Sorry for rambling on about a "chebbie", but its been a real good vehicle. They do NOT make them like this anymore!

I've always wanted to put a Buick 350 or 455 in. I have a couple of engines to put in there. But the darn thing just keeps running like a watch. If it don't break (knock on wood), don't fix it.

    Had 2 chev products.

1971 Burnt Orange/Rust two tone Monte Carlo. Really crappy on the outside but it had the nicest black cloth interior and a 350 2 bbl that just would not die. I drove it for two winters in college when the stage 1 was stored. Sold it to a friend that eventually restored it he liked it so much.

Also a 1968 Custom Cab fleetside shortbox pickup. Red, V-8 stick shift with a red vinyl bucket seat interior that I have no idea if it was original but it sure was cool. Owned it for about a month before some guy stopped me in a parking lot with a cash offer I couldn't refuse.

I would own another 68-72 Chev Truck. Anybody have a solid 69-72 Blazer for sale?

I have had a few myself........

I have had a couple suburbans, a 1 ton Dually(pulled the Buick of course), and a 63' Nova. Made a couple NMCA races with that car and had a good time with it. It was fast and cheap, and really consistant. BUT to be honest, I have a little catch phrase I use now...................

"Glidden will ALWAYS be Ford to me..........and ANY IDIOT can buy/build a Chevy.............Dare ya, be different !" That is NOT a personal shot at anyone out there. If you think it was, go find someplace else to start a arguement. If you into Chevies, then kool, thats your deal, It's just not mine. I will respect your choice if you return the gesture.

When I was going to school my old instructor did everything he could to get me to admit that I would build a chevy. He asked me one day, "what would you build if you couldn't build a Buick?" To that I replied: " a Pontiac ! He said "ok, then what?", I said a Olds ! He groaned a bit and said " okkkkk, then what, and I said a Mopar, lol". That ended the conversation. I mean really......anything I could possibly think of to try already has been done and blown up,lol. Kinda like going to the track and seeing a sea of bowties. BIG DEAL !! I don't even really look at them anymore. My tastes are aimed at Buicks now and thats all !!! I go to races that have Buicks there. Thats what I wanna see and get ideas from.

As an example: If you went to the GS Nats and they all of a sudden let "other" brands in, what would you "see" in the event ? In MY opinion, JUST ANOTHER BRACKET RACE !!!!!!!  . I can get that here, without traveling 15 hours to see it. Not saying that this would happen, but to me personally, this scenario would = useless trip. No thanks, I ain't pulling to it.

I respect all the brands in some ways, I do. I have owned alot of nice cars with different badges on them. Some I would like to have back, others, like the Nova for example, I could care less that the guy I sold it to totaled it.

    Just my opinions ...............

I must say that I did really love my '78 Malibu. I still love the styling... love that late 70's boxy look! Every once in a while I look around eBay to see if I can find another one...

This isn't my Malibu but this one looks a lot like mine did:

Dave, if someone walked up to you and said "any idiot can build a buick" how would you take it?? I would suggest you change the tone somewhat if you really do have respect for other makes.

Keep in mind chevy has built some crazy cars, and although they are more common, there is no reason for their owners to love them any less. Lord knows they can much more done per $ than with our cars.

    Just a thought.

I have a big respect for other makes besides the BOP's, but when I go to a local car show, and half are 69 camaros with 350's, and the other half are 57 bel airs with 350's, it gets kinda old. I'd love to see even a Yugo for a change of pace. There was one of those turbo 4 carbed corvairs here, and THAT was sweet. Also, I remember a 66 impala with a 502, dual carbs, lowered with chrome rims, gloss black paint that looked 5 miles deep, and perfect chrome. Beautiful car. I don't have anything against Chevies, but if you're gonna do one, please be different. I'd give my left one for my dad's 62 bel air. It was a white 2 door with spider webbed black paint, black steel rims, buckets from a 70 camaro and a 283. Now if I ever see one of those at a car show, I"ll have to fall on my knees before it simply because the owner dared to be different.

OK this is great..........Thanks Guys I appreciate yall winnin' me a bet with the wife. As predicted by me, yall read too much into the statement I made.

"Glidden will ALWAYS be Ford to me..........and ANY IDIOT can buy/build a Chevy.............Dare ya, be different !"

Read ALL of the statement, don't just pick out the part you want to use against me. It was made to describe the general ease that Joe chevy racer has in the world today. Flat out if you can tell me ANY brand that is easier and cheaper to build than a Chevy, I will copy this thread off on the printer, and eat the pages. It was a 3 part statement in regards to ME !!!!

1- Bob Glidden was and always will be Ford to me. I talked to him in Texas at one of the pro stock super bowls one year for quite a while. Great guy, smart man and has a great working background. I respect him as much or more than any other racer I know. Especially when you ask him about his Ford backing(at the time). Very informative.

2- Chevies. Now there are guys out there that love Chevies just as I do Buicks(Hello Jim). My best friend here at home is a Chevy guy. And some of them have fantastic cars. Good for them, I appreciate their dedication, hard work, and loyalty to their "brand". BUT !!!!! (and this is where my idiot statement comes in), how many times have you seen some idiot(or whatever), at the track with every toy that is possible to purchase, going fast ? Several, I agree, so we move on...... Out of all those "types", how many do you suppose know what the hell is going on with the car ? Most(maybe??) ok. Again I agree. But, at virtually every track I have been too, at some time, you see "THAT 1" . That one guy that has no clue what is going on. That one "idiot" that has to have one of his buddies to set the timing on the car. That one dipstick thats stages the BACK tires in the beams( i have seen this done locally, and on both coasts) in cars (in all 3 cases) that cost more than my house, NOT just someone learning how to race in their street car, real racecars. ALL chevies, and all in the hands of that previously mentioned "idiot" that had the means to just BUY his way in. Or he saw it on TV and decided that he would try, and on TV this guy had a Chevy, look at all the parts I can get(new and used). Thus another "idiot" is born. And thus my comment. Did I mean it as a personal shot at anyone ? well hell no ! And I think that anyone that knows me would understand that. In either case had you kept reading I stated that already.

3- Dare ya be different........... thats easy so we'll move on.

Tim........."Dave, if someone walked up to you and said "any idiot can build a buick" how would you take it??"

You didn't understand me. the statement was "buy/build", meaning one word, not just "build". If someone wants to think me an idiot fine, I don't care. The actual labor of building a motor is the same in every case out there. They are all 5 cycle(that number won't confuse a builder, lol) internal combustion engines. Crank, rods, valves etc. The building part is not hard. How would I take it ??? Don't know, depends on the person making the statement I guess. Have I built motors ? yup. Do I know everything there is to know about a Buick ? Nope and won't ever claim to. When you meet "that" guy that knows absolutley positively everything about a Buick let me know. I have a few questions for him.

I will close by apologizing to anyone that I may have offended out there with my statement. I am truley sorry and I apologize !! But to be honest I HAVE NOT seen anything on this board since day 1 ( and I have been here that long) that leads me to believe we have "that" guy here. The Chevy guys that are here aren't even remotely close to the "idiot" I referred too. Next time you go to the track, look for the guy I described................you'll see him, and hopefully understand what I meant.
