A lot of labor, but a labor of love. Boat will be in ship-shape!

Just hasta last another 20 or so year Jerry, then itll be a Viking funeral LOL...

Yesterday I pull off the plastic. I absolutely could not deal with the dust anymore. Seriously, its like sitting in your car grinding the entire interior down to bare shiny steel (with the windows closed). Just being able to hose it down eliminated about 20lbs of sanding dust, and gave me some renewed enthusiasm. Thats been gone for a while, but the drive to finish it never left. Theres a world of difference between the two as well.

Get to finish my last lymphedema therapy session today at 0800, and then go see whats what after the rain last night. Wouldnt ya know there was NO RAIN here for 2 weeks and the day the wrap comes off, oh well.

My paid helper didnt bother to even call for a reach around yesterday, so it was a solo job as per usual. Glad thats over with until next October. Then it begins AGAIN... ws

That rain is headed our way today, Bill. The Viking funeral would be visible from here across the lake. I can see where you wouldn't miss your paid helper. They don't know jack anyway.

Frankfort, Mi. is just a hop across the lake, say 60 miles or so... The helpers can manage to squeeze (and bend bones) to get into spaces that old fat guys cant make it anymore! Still hafta stand there and tell 'em "Theres a 1/2" nut underneath that bracket, heres the wrench for it". Really, its not a time saver, just a convenience. Im always a one man band... ws

No help today so i turned into a chiseler LOL. Had enough sun for a quick varnish coat and then the the wind changed and dropped about 20 degrees. Decided to work inside with the heat on. Had to scrape some old BELZONA epoxy outa the bilge and go back with OEM bitumastic with aluminum powder material. I chiseled the epoxy out and the aluminum was wet and some was powdery white. Unacceptable! Good job for a rainy day... ws

Bill, does that roof coating also act as a sealer? I've got a '62 Terry Travel trailer I'm restoring to tug behind the beater F100 and the roof leaks in heavy rain. Looking for something with a shiny metal finish as I'm polishing the exposed metal on the siding, and I'd like the roof to match. (Yeah, that's right, I got Cragars on my camper)

Silvercoat, used for sealing metal roofs works well. Don't panic when you open the bucket and it is black. It has to be mixed as all the silver particles are in the bottom.

TTBOMK.... its made to coat metal roofs, and waterproof anything else that seeps/leaks. Its a liquid asphalt with aluminum dust in suspension. If you know where the leaks are, I'd use a polysulfide or polyurethane caulk (cheap stuff) and trowel a bead on with your finger (or even a bondo spreader) and paint with this stuff. DO NOT USE RTV. Around here, the farmers paint the barn roofs with it and it looks like chrome aluminum. Personally, I think it would compliment the rest of the aluminum on the trailer.

The only drawback to the stuff is you have to keep a drill/mixer ready as it may settle out in the can. Once applied, the tar stuff adheres to the base and the aluminum floats(?) to the top. I plan on painting the bilge Sunday and can report back with pics of course!. ws

Yes Sir. And you need to keep it mixed like the stuff you use.

Thanks! I always thought the silver rose to the top after applying. The OEM stuff that failed is black on the application side, and a wood chisel barely scrapes the silver off. Pretty tuff stuff. ws

Thanks fellas, and that'd be great Bill! Boat is looking good....man that's a lot of commitment. I've been following this thread, too, just not commenting. When I moved back from Alaska (I only lived there for 3 or 4 months) the only position they had for me at the job I had before was as a rigger/boat tech. Honestly hated it, but it was all fiberglass and aluminum boats (Nautiques, Trackers, Tahoes, and Bennington pontoons). They only made me do that for 6 months until they made me service manager, told myself I'd never touch a boat again unless I was riding in it haha. Weeks of 100 degree days working outside in a dirt floor lean-to will do that to a guy.

Ha, ha, ha... I resemble that remark.

Had to crawl up on top of ductwork in the hospital, than remove a 18" x 18" access door on the duct above the one I'm crawling on, climb through that access down to some fresh air dampers inside that had slipped open on the shaft to reposition them. Being a hospital and this air handler feeds the area with all the autoclaves where they sterilize and prepare instuments for surgeons I can't shut it off so working in gale force winds. Plus everything is wrapped in fiberglass so I wear coveralls but I'm getting too old to do this anymore. CRAMP!!!!!! Oooo, oooo, oooo...

Pat stopped by today to say while she was bopping around town on her scooter. "Hey baby, would ya do me a little favor?" If I did this theyd call 911 with the Jaws of Life to extricate me LOL... The rest of all the crud is cleaned up and ready for a quick roller job of the silver bitumastic. That oughta be fun laing flat on my face rolling it on just underneath me! Pics tomorrow for Lucas war hero !

Got started this morning about 0800 and it was kinda chilly inside. Already took Tyrone home so I had to resort to his lil' bro' 25 cent. ws

Cripes Bill, you must be one helluva guy, she's a helluva lady, or I bet a bit of both. Good for you guys. Looking forward to pics of the coating and probably ordering it up this week. Pulled the camper out of its spot and starting to rebuild the axle.

Im on a roll pal.. Gotta get the inside bottom job done this morning, then me 'n Pat are delivering her two cockatiels to a rescue/foster home in Green Bay. Hate to see them go but Im allergic to their dander and the same is no good for Pat and her emphysema/COPD. Maybe this'll help?? Then we can also repaint inside. Pat was always worried about latex fumes (?) and the birds, and we could ever seem to co-ordinate getting them outside and painting in one operation.

Pats reward for climbing into the dark hole of Calcutta yesterday is Olive Garden for lunch today! YUMM.

I dont know if it shows in the pics, but all that chiseling (and now painting) is lying face down on the floor at an absolute end of arms reach, with a pile of sharp tools. All that aluminum framing is kinda sharp; my breastbone(!) and arms are absolutely killing me, and now the ring finger and pinky finger on my left hand are totally numb. Even after ice pax yesterday and overnight.

Ta' hell with the agony and the ecstasy! Got to the job at 0800 expecting the worst as usual. Left the windows open last night for some afro ventilation and everything was dry and ready to paint. Got the mixer on the VSR drill and sunk it to the bottom. The aluminum had settled out so tight that a spin on the drill had the gallon can spinning narrowly averting a mess. It took at least 1/2 hour of serious mixing AND some heat from 25 cent to get the stuff soft enough to mix. Ultimately it became the consistency of pancake batter, but stiffer.

I went to roll it on. Filled a small tray from the gallon can with a large soup ladle. Learned that trick a long time ago. Commenced to roll the stuff on and it really sucked. Each back roll would lift the previous stuff back up. Ended up doing the job with a harbor fright 4" wide brush with a 16" long handle. Aside from mixing it, the whole job took about an hour. I couldnt believe it. Fumes were low too.

I was gonna ask Pat to climb in again and paint, but I know what the results would've been; the space is pretty cramped to begin with! By the time I finished, the other end was well on its way to flashing off. I was home at 1030hrs. ws
