"My goal is 550-570 and while the SPX is a very good intake...I want the nostalgic look."

I have an old Wildcat Cool Runner intake on my 523 and it supports 820 HP.....so far! You'll have NO issues with that intake at that level!

Unless someone has already done it for you..

Your going to want to lay in a good supply of carbides and cartridge rolls.

That early KB Intake for the spread-bore had more steps in the plenum than the US capital!

I chuckled when I saw the tape over the plenum. Hopefully someone has already taken care of it for you.. it's a bunch of work.

But I ported the snot of one, and it was on the prototype Level 2A motor, and it worked well.

Later motors built with the SPX took a lot less work.

    Good luck, and have fun!

Thanks...I'm having fun with it and it hasnt even arrived! All those steps wont matter much on slightly warmed over engine anyway(classy touch slamming a board members purchase by the way)...but the best thing about it to me is that it is a Kenne Bell part...what I wanted and what I got, right here.

I don't think Jim meant to slam you in any way on that post. . . He's obviously just stating that the original design could benefit from a little work, and that being said, I'm inclined to believe him.

Looks like it's in nice shape. :TU:

It would be no discredit to me if "Jim" did slam me, and vice versa..this is an open forum. At any rate I am more inclined to believe what this guy (Steve) has to say about my mild engine build. Its all good.

I don't think Jim was dis'n you in any way. He's correct for my level of build, a SPX would have been MUCH better. I had an old Wildcat Cool Runner laying around and since I was at the limit of my budget, I opted for the MUCH "worked over" Wildcat, vs spending more on a new SPX. Besides, I seem to like doing things the hard way!! LOL

I had an "out of the box" Wildcat intake on my blue car that ran 10.90's in full street trim. 4000 lbs with driver, through full exhaust, 430 heads, 308s cam, etc, etc. That calculates to over 600 HP. You'll have no problem!

    ENJOY IT!!!

I didn't see that either. You got an old school intake with the KB logo that you were looking for. If you want to optimize it, it may take some work, that's all. Anything off the shelf can be massaged for the better, it's just a matter of how much you want to do for what you're trying to get.

I guess my choice of wording (trying to be humorous) was taken the wrong way.

    How about:

I think you will find that that particular version of the Wildcat can be improved quite a bit with some work in the plenum area. I have experience with that exact manifold, on a couple of street type engines of that HP range, and I found that this work was required to achieve the goal in HP, with that particular Q-jet pattern Manifold. They stopped short with the mill, and it needs a fair amount of blending.

The Holley version of this manifold, which I have made 625-650 HP with in street type motors, several times, does not have this issue.

The SPX Q-jet flange manifold has a more finished plenum area.

Just sharing my experience with several builds of the type your doing, with that particular manifold, for your benefit.

    northcorner Guess what I'm thinking..

It would be nice to see a pic as a reference to this. I have a cool runner that was a spreadbore. I had it fly cut and blended to a dominator flange. The work looked pretty good to me, but after reading this, I'm curious if I should give it another look. By the way, when I bolted the cool runner on my engine, I didn't care if I actually went slower with it, I really like the old school look it has. It really shines next to the KB valve covers. Before I started using the cool runner, I was using a heavily ported/modified B4B. It also was converted to a 4500 flange. I saw no improvement or loss with either manifold, but then again I'm only spinning the motor to 5800 rpm's.

Stumbled on this post a little late, but I have one I bought in 96 with the Dominator flange. I used it on several engines and was always happy with it. I ran mid to low 10s in a non stripped 68 Skylark and that was with home boy ported iron heads. I don't remember having to do a bunch to it. Still have it on the shelf in the basement. It's not eating much. Guess I will hold on to it.

It is a matter of preference indeed Mr.Baker. I expect my Cool Runner will look quite allright underneath my ThermoQuad 1000CFM Comp series carb next to my Poston valve covers...perched on my Finishline ported Edelbrock heads..behind my Finishline/Proform front cover...flanked by my Poston headers. I am working on a Dream here Gentlemen.
