Looking to buy a new water pump. How do you know if you have a long or short water pump.

My motor is a 76 455 with 72 heads and intake. The pulleys are 1235777 and 1235778 which appear to be 71-73 vintage.

All signs point to needing a long shaft water pump but just wanted to make sure.

Also, is the x-tra special version (double the price) worth it from TA performance?

    Thanks!

Long pump needed with those pullies,..and I haven't had a TA pump , but unless your in a hot climate,..I wouldn't spend that money

No on the pump. Although TA components are top of the line parts...If you have a cooling problem, its most likely not due to the pump. It is a very cool high tech design I gotta say.

Thanks! Haven’t had a cooling problem yet, but it gets toasty here in the Carolina’s. Figured motors out of the car, thought I’d freshen up and replace the wear items. Was thinking of getting TA’s basic pump. Should be better than autozone.

Best thing for cooling is perfect timing and air/ratio. Have someone on the board here recurve your distributor. Best performance adder I've found yet.

How do you if you have a long or short water pump? The long water pump has a 1 inch snout [ the part that holds the pulley] the short water pump has half inch snout.Bruno.

Thanks. But the pulley is still on it. Do you happen to have a measurement of the pulley?

The 777 and 778 pulley setup will only work with the long pump, it will hit the short pump body there where your tape measure is, get a parts store pump, if it does something stupid you go get another one under warranty, if you order one you are stuck shipping it back and being down or just sol,..
