Man, I hope the guys from Legendary paid attention to Copo Pete and Jimmy Johnson last year, because their last Muslecar and Small Block shootout were less than impressive:

No, Tom, Choking your chicken does NOT qualify as "beating on the bird".

    Brono?

Hey Bruno. Thats not your 69 goat that's in the shootout is it?
I know you guys are buddies, and that looks real familiar.
    So IS it or not?
I guess the only real way to tell is open the trunk and see if it's weighted down with lamb kabobs for extra traction

    Just an FYI here everyone:

Being close to the 29th,I wanted to look up what time the Shootout would air. Looks like 8:00pm and 12:00pm eastern. I'd double check this though.

The rub here is that when I checked this at : www.speedtv.com ,the show listed in those timeslots was actually the older shootout from a couple years ago. Hopefully it's a typo ,but I wanted to throw it out here, just in case.

John Brown On permanant vacation !!

Now if ole Peter Klute would just let an experienced driver, let's say like JJ, run those cars down the 1/4 mile you would have probably seen a 12 second run out of the GTO. Peter K. just aint the best at shifting those 4 speeds. Give him an automatic! :3gears:

    chryco63 14's or bust!

That was a good episode! Exciting for me because that's my local track, and my buddy was on the film crew for both the Big Block Shootout, and the Small Block shootout last year.

Man, those SC/Ramblers sure raise the eyebrows! :TU:

Compared to JJ, he should also wear a tutu.

Love to see him try to shift a three on the tree car.....but not my car. Scattered lots of them and bent a lot of shift levers before I learned the exact way to get it right. Each car was different. Some were just "unspeedshiftable!" (Like Olds and Cadillac 3 speeds). :bglasses:

    Hi guys,

Don't post here much, but I read all the threads. BTW, Dave H., I love your avatar.

Here are the results from the Super Musclecar Shootout:

    Braking
    -------
    1. 69 Shelby Mustang 428SCJ
    2. 69 RAIV GTO Royal Bobcat
    3. 69 Baldwin-Motion 427 Camaro
    4. 69 AMC Hurst Rambler/Scrambler
    5. 69 Super Bee (Mr. Norm's)
    6. 69 Yenko Nova 427

    Slalom
    ------
    1. 69 Baldwin-Motion 427 Camaro
    2. 69 Shelby Mustang 428SCJ
    3. 69 RAIV GTO Royal Bobcat
    4. 69 Super Bee (Mr. Norm's)
    5. 69 AMC Hurst Rambler/Scrambler
    6. 69 Yenko Nova 427

    0-60 mph
    --------
    1. 69 RAIV GTO Royal Bobcat - 5.40 sec
    2. 69 Super Bee (Mr. Norm's) - 5.65 sec
    3. 69 AMC Hurst Rambler/Scrambler - 5.85 sec
    4. 69 Baldwin-Motion 427 Camaro - 6.05 sec
    5. 69 Shelby Mustang 428SCJ - 6.20 sec
    6. 69 Yenko Nova 427 - 6.25 sec

    1/4 mile
    --------

    1. 69 RAIV GTO Royal Bobcat - 13.04 @ 106 mph
    2. 69 Baldwin-Motion 427 Camaro - 13.41 @ 106 mph
    3. 69 Super Bee (Mr. Norm's) - 13.83 @ 102 mph
    4. 69 AMC Hurst Rambler/Scrambler - 13.87 @ 101 mph
    5. 69 Yenko Nova 427 - 13.96 @ 101 mph
    6. 69 Shelby Mustang 428SCJ - 14.08 @99 mph

The RAIV was the overall winner. :Brow:

The Yenko Nova suffered wheel hop and was a fresh resto, but I don't believe it was "off" enough to explain why it came in dead last in nearly every event. The Shelby had the largest factory wheels and tires, the AMC Rambler/Scrambler had the smallest.

The RAIV just flat out cranked, although I did notice the car lift its ass end on launch, so I believe it may have had hop-stop (or no-hop) bars installed. This may explain why the GTO seemed to hook much better than the other cars.

Part of the problem that I saw was the driver. Peter Klute (host and driver) is a very good road racer, and he can get a car down the 1/4 mile pretty well. But he stated that the owners of these cars told him the best way to launch them was to "walk" the car off the line, then gradually get into it. I winced when I saw that, as the Baldwin-Motion car looked like it was pulling away from a stop light in rush hour traffic before it started moving. But Peter did his best with the short time he had to play with starting line techniques, and I think he did a pretty good job.

He did a great job taking these cars through the pylons. The Baldwin-Motion car had a quick ratio box, while others had regular power steering (different ratios), and some had manual steering I believe. Peter did a heck of a job trying to quickly figure out how each car would react flinging them through the pylons. From inside the car, he looked like he was riding a roller coaster going through severe loops and g-turns.

It was also interesting to hear Milt Schornack talk about how he prepped and ported the first 75 sets of Hurst Rambler/Scrambler heads for Hurst and AMC. The AMC 390, in the AMX or Hurst S/C, are very underrated engines. They produce power and torque very similar to a Pontiac 400. Also interesting to note was that all cars ran on the same brand tires (provided by Coker), and they were all 4-speeds.

The Baldwin-Motion cars were guaranteed to 11.50's or your money back, but that was with slicks, and a certified NHRA driver. As they stated in the show, no one ever returned their car for a refund. These cars were truly wicked, but with skinny tires and a soft foot, they appeared vulnerable to cars with much less horsepower.

I would love to see a shootout with cars that were all around performers, like the 70 AAR Cuda, 70 AMX 390, 70 RAIV Trans Am, 70 Boss 302 Mustang, etc. These cars would be a blast to see going through the pylons, as well as the 1/4 mile.

Forgot to mention, this is my first post since re-registering, but I've been on here since 2002.

Dave H., I thought that since these were all 1969 models, and that they considered the 69 Hurst Rambler/Scrambler a "dealer car" because Hurst made the mods, they should have used a 69 Hurst/Olds as well, but good luck finding a 4-speed version to match the others.

Agreed. I'm building a 68 the way Olds should have done the 68 442. 4 speed, 455 Toro engine, red paint with Hurst type deck lid and stripes. The car is a real W30, but I don't like the band aid stripes or the small bore 400 G block.

Never raced an automatic, don't ever plan to. :bglasses:

I like that avatar, too, but getting a little old. Will change it again when I find one I like better.

    Stock Cars????????
It as VERY Interesting to watch the GTO leave, let alone the Burn out.
I wouldn't say the car was equipped with Anti Hop Bars :bglasses: or anything like that.
A couple more spring straps might have helped the Nova as well.
(Still crying about the l-78 Nova I missed Years ago, when the BOZO traded it for 2 VERY Used Honda SL 350s heads up)
Have to admit, my favorite though was the Rambler. It did about Everything it was supposed to do when New, and STILL is my Unsung Hero. (Would make a Nice replacement for My 70 GS Convertible)
