This is weird - I noticed that while IE is starting that it hits a "ad" site before it goes to the homepage. It shows in the window at the bottom left. No wonder I'm getting pop ups! :af: How do I get rid of that? - Bill
Ooooo.... Also happened to me. Short answer: get a spyware removal program. Like Adaware or Spybot Search and Destroy. Run them once a week. I downloaded them both for free. Long answer: Internet Explorer is completely rife with security breaches. It's almost silly, it's so completely targeted by spyware and hackers and whatnot. Use a different browser. I use Mozilla Firefox. Very similar to the way IE runs. But i don't get all the redirects, registry changes, etc. that i dealt with when using IE. It was so bad on my system, IE wouldn't browse the net unless you linked around- no address typed in would be sought out! A system restore didn't fix this. Now I don't use IE at all and there's zero problems. Firefox is a quick download, something like 3.6 MB. Took about 25 minutes on my 56.6 dialup. You won't be disapponted in it, in my opinion. Just do a Goggle or yahoo search for Firefox. Good luck!
crazybrowser.com is a neat shell program for IE. It has pop up stopper built in with lots of other neat things. It still uses your stock IE but give it more options.
What Chris said. I've been using Mozilla (Phoenix) Fire(bird/fox) for almost a year. I also use Spybot Search and Destroy (that exact name, don't go for other "Spy-somethings." Linux is great too, but can be a bit difficult for beginners. I presently use Mandrake and Debian. If you want to try linux, try Knoppix Its large - a whole cd, so you might need a broadband connection. Download it, burn it to a CD, pop the CD in and reboot. Knoppix runs completely from the CD and in your computer memory - it won't touch the hard drive. You can play with it and decide if you like Linux. If so, you can install it, or any other free linux you want - there are many versions.
yea i probably jumped the gun there. sorry especially since the 2.6 kernel can cause dual boot problems http://lwn.net/Articles/86835/ i used to help people out and fix their computers 5-10 years ago 7 out of 10 computers i looked at had some kind of hardware problem. now 9 out of 10 have software snafus. 1. worms and viruses caused by insecure programming 2. malware, spybots etc. now i will help you if you have linux, and i am most familiar with redhat/fedora type distributions randy
http://ftp.netscape.com/pub/netscape7/english/7.2/windows/win32/NSSetup.exe Direct link to netscape 7.2. Download it and SERIOUSLY forget about internet explorer.
that is just the setup.exe if your familiar with FTP programs they are better for downloads from site like that. Most big URLS keep open FTP site that let you bypass setup.exe installers. ftp.netscape.com/pub/netscape7/english/7.2/windows/win32/sea/NSSetup-Base.exe [12 meg] ftp.netscape.com/pub/netscape7/english/7.2/windows/win32/sea/NSSetup-Full.exe [25 meg] Most browsers should just open the ftp site. try putting ftp. in front of URLs ftp.netscape.com/pub/ ftp.mozilla.org/pub/ ftp.opera.com/pub/ you don't need the pub but most have the default pub [public] folder where they stick stuff. Just gotta dig around sometime but you get access to the actual file.
I assume he has a download manager if he used dial up. You gotta use one to download anything worth while now a days. I use an older version of flashget
Thanks guys. I am on broadband. I run spyware stormer constantly. I used to use netscape but had many problems with it with security issues with some sites I use that I dropped it for IE, Maybe I will switch back. But is there some way to clean out the IE start up or something? I really don't have time to rebuild or switch OS. - Bill
Bill, forgive me if I'm being to basic here, but have you tried starting IE and going to "Tools/internet options" and change the start page to something you want it to start at? Good luck :TU:

Versions from 1.2.9 are not vulnerable. Additionally a flaw in the CIDRACL code has been discovered which can lead to an escalation in access rights within the ftp site. This flaw affects all versions up to and including 1.2.9, it has been fixed in cvs and 1.2.10rc1. To avoid the flaw do not use CIDR based ACLs on vulnerable versions or use mod_wrap and /etc/hosts.allow|deny. 888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888 i guess i am overly critical of anonymous ftp because that is how my server was hacked several years ago. randy
My hosting company defeats that some by putting all public ftp folders above everything else. So there is no connection to your website folders where public ftp access is locked out. like two accounts. but it makes some thing harder. ftp is the one of the oldest pirate systems around. P2P just made it easier.
I have a recent problem with explorer just in the last 2 days. while my boy was surfin the web somehow we ended up with a begin2search toolbar under the explorer toolbar and now i get popups that i never got before. i ran adaware, hijackthis and spybot but none seem to be able to catch or get rid of this problem. my homepage still comes up fine. i should mention that i already removed downloadsplus and several other nuisance programs that appeared at the same time

Sorry, I hope I'm not being too basic here, but before running Adaware, Spybot, etc., make sure you have the latest version, and be sure to update the libraries to make sure the software has the latest list of things to look for. As for security issues or things that only MSIE will do - I decided if it doesn't meet a web standard, or wasn't composed to correctly display in anything except MSIE, then I'm not interested in it.
Bald Menace, I just went through that same thing. Download and run "Spybot search and destroy" ( available free at www.tucows.com ) After that go to begin2search homepage and hit their uninstall exe at the bottom of the page, Tell the kid don't click on anymore crap! Steve
