Well someone had to yes yes to the installer for that. It might of just been a simple pop up asking yes or no. But it didn't install by its self. I have t he same problem with my mom. Her computer goes funky and all of a sudden she has 2-3 tool bars and a bunch of spy ware that she never installed. Someone has to say yes to the install. Those things are super hard to remove at times. With no uninstalls. try add remove programs.
computer Rick - yeah, but this skips infront of the home page like a beacon to all the ad junk...here's another sucker! :af: Truzi - yeah, I update everthing as often as possible, still weird. Those ad jerks can be really agressive. I go to the windows task manager and watch the processes. The ad stuff comes on automatically. I kill it and it reopens under a new name!!! :moonu: It will open IE by itself. WHen I try to search for the process by its name I can't find it. :af: I downloaded Netscape 7.2, we'll see how it does! :TU: - Bill
be sure to run the update function on adaware and spybot... makes a big difference. You could also just try going to add/remove programs and get rid of anything that seems like spyware (myClick, Search***) whatever.
Thanks for the tips. I got everything uninstalled. funny thing is even with spybot and hijackthis updated they didnt detect the begin2search.com or the abetterinternet.com software on my computer. and yes i know that somebody had to click yes several times to install these programs and i'm dealing with that as well. those programs didnt show up in the add/remove programs area of my control panel. anyways thanks a bunch
You can try to disable the startup of the program. Start in Safe Mode - when you boot you'll see a note to press F8 for more options - you can get into safemode that way. If you have XP, you can click the Start button, choose "Run," and type "msconfig". The last tab will let you remove checkmarks so programs will not start when you start the machine. If you have 2000, you'll have to type "regedit" instead of msconfig - and be very careful b/c you can screw up your machine. If you are going to try regedit, let us know and we'll tell you where to go from there. A caveat, however, is that some things are not in the typical startup locations. About the only other thing to do is to search google for the programs/processes in question, determine if they are good or bad, and find directions to remove each one - its a pain.
Xteq Systems X-Setup (http://www.xteq.com) Is a very good tool for deleting hidden start up items. Alone with lots of other hidden tricks for any OS. Very handy tool. I use it mostly just to stop hidden start ups.
They have this neat little program http://www.xteq.com/downloads/xq-urlbandit.zip url bandit. It makes a list of every URL or link you copy n paste or click on. Its better then History and just makes a simple txt file that is super small.
Hmm, my Windows 2000 does use "regedit." Yes, it was a clean install on an empty HD. The same is true for the machines at the college I work for - perhaps its a service pack issue. I just tried your "regedt32" and that worked as well. It looks a bit more "cluttered" to me, but I think I like it better as it gives separate windows for each H_KEY. Easier to navigate - nice :TU: Xteq is a powerful program... I love to tweak my machine (thats why I'm using linux now). Also, I believe Spybot has a section that mimics msconfig. I've also been able to take a copy of msconfig, put it on 2000, and have it work - go figure
