I'm looking for a 12.7:1 Steering Box for my 71 GS. Had the box changed 3 years ago because it was old and leaking, and my car was going into a shop for some paint work... Well ,they didn't put the correct box in, threw out my original, and now the new POS ( lares corp ) box leaks. Really tired of dealing with crappy replacement parts that aren't correct... Anybody have one?... Lou

Do you have any certain Julian date range that you are looking for?

I've got one taken from a low mileage 71 Skylark. Where are you located?

There were 2 different ones available. Quick ratio and standard.

I thought all the stock ones were variable ratio. Specs from the 71 Chassis Manual,

71-72’s had both a standard and quick ratio box.

70 Skylark/GS’s only had the standard ratio box.
For 1970 the Quick Ratio box was only available on the GSX.

Was the 70 GSX box quicker than the 71-72 boxes? Felt that way vs my 71-72 455 quick boxes....but maybe the smaller steering wheel made the difference....

    That's incorrect...
For the 1970 GSX it was the "variable ratio"... not the quick ratio.
    They are a different animal.
Call Hector he can explain the difference for the record.

Lou - are looking for a nice quick ratio box (you said 12:1) or is this for a restoration (OEM factory correct)?

"Fast variable ratio" is what Buick called it in 71. So there was a fast non-variable as well?

The box I had was the 12.7 to 1... That's the one I'd like to get and put back in...

Hello Geoff, I am in Waterford, near Albany... it's the " quick ratio 12.7:1 box "?... If so, YES I want it ... I could take a ride this Saturday and get it if it's " the one "...

I grew up in Waterford - WHHS class of 75, but left HS in 74, so I know exactly where it is.

Any way, I'm in Florida for the winter. I won't be home until mid-May.

You can have the steering box if you want. I can't check anything until I get home. The car it came off had maybe 32k on it when I changed it for one of Hector's quick ratio boxes.

    Let me know.

Thank you, but I would prefer to have the original style box, which was quick ratio. I was class of 75 as well, left in 74 to enlist in the Coast Guard. Thank you for your efforts, but again I'm going to keep looking for the one like I originally had.. Lou

Just looking to get a 12.7 to 1 Saginaw box like the one I originally had... Lou

It's a 71 GS stage 1... It originally had a 12.7 to 1 box in it. That was what was taken out by the knucklehead that shouldn't have thrown it out, but did... Lou

Yep that should be a #6 Saginaw housing. I certainly wouldn’t let any of my cores go for pennies on the dollar. Doesn’t Lares have warranty on their units? Looked at their online catalog recently they are certainly not cheap on price!
