Larry, I used to be able to make a u-turn on Merillon avenue in Westbury, at my old place. Whether or not someone put a 12.7:1 in it between 71 and 98 when I found it abandoned, beat up and left for dead I can't say. But when you saw the car at KMart back in the summer of 98 in gray primer and any other time since then at Bruno's, it had that steering box in it. 3 years ago an idiot backed up out of his garage into my quarter panel, and I took it to a guy on Long Island ( won't name names but he'll never see my car again!!!) and he changed the Box because it was leaking and worn out, but he didn't give me back what he took out. So the bottom line is, my car was made in May of 71 and I don't really give a damn what build sheet says what, I want what I had. And that's what I'm going to get, one way or the other. So I hope somebody can help me out with that... Lou

Sounds like you are getting a little frustrated Lou. Can't say I blame you. The title of your thread says "correct" steering box wanted. I think most guys are reading that as a 1971 box that was original to the car with correct date code. From what I am reading, you just want what was in the car since you have owned it, and that may in fact be a replacement with fast ratio internals that a PO put in there. In any case, looking for a 1971 stock box may not get you what you want. I suggest you PM Hector on V8, screen name CARHEX1. He has been selling fast steering boxes to members for years. Here is an example of what he sells,

Years ago (at least 20), I bought a fast ratio steering box from Year One. It sounds a lot like the ones Hector sells, 3 1/4 turns lock to lock. There are other boxes out there that may turn fewer turns lock to lock, but the internal stops are different, and that compromises turning radius without necessarily faster ratio turning. Also part of the faster ratio is in the different pitman arm lengths from different cars. I think one of Hector's boxes will satisfy you needs. I'm not sure this thread will get you what you want and need. Hope that helps.

I tried sending Hector a message yesterday. .. Hope I hear from him. But I got to tell you this, I don't believe Buick was real accurate to their build sheet statistics. Especially in regards to the fact that there was a strike in 71 and I'm pretty sure if they had stuff laying around they used it. Bruno used to tell me " they did what they wanted to do"... I can't see anybody changing that box before I owned it, because I know the car hadn't been registered in at least a dozen years prior to me, and when I found it they had been taking stuff off it for years, instead of putting anything back. All I know is, the Saginaw 808 that's in it right now came from lares corp, it's only got about 10,000 miles on it And it leaks and it's not 3 1/4 turn, like it used to be. It blows . Lou

I understand, but even if GM used that box originally in your car, for whatever reason, looking for a 71 box will probably disappoint you. I think Hector is your best bet. Hopefully, you can get in touch soon.

Lou is your car a 455 originally? As far as I know only the 455 cars were available with the faster boxes for some reason.....
