Who's the idiot that said color sanding is therapeutic ?? ahhahahaah did the whole shell and hood now onto doors ,fenders but now I need a break its was neat like in the beginning but now have to take a break for a week my arms and back are killing me have to find some massage therapy :Brow: I feel sorry for someone that does that for a living everyday. also a note ...my sealer was red oxide under the red paint so the only problem that I learned is that you have to be extra careful when color sanding especially if the sealer is close to paint color ou: red oxide is very close to my color sanded red paint I have like a dry bronzy red . otherwise great coverage....so great that all I need was 1 coat of base ...2 was no change but I gave it 3 ..that dbc goes on like silk ..lesson for next resto
I would burn through the clear ...I know myslef pou: with them power tools But maybe I do that on my mothers 2005 cavalier before I tear down my homemade spray booth ....
some pics from last week before color sanding ......color is much darker than pics show doors are cautiously put on .....and I mean cautiously reflection time ....after 2 coats of hs clear -what supply guys recommended "Automotive Art".....a happy choice imo but then again I dont have anything else to compare it with ...first timer clear coat here. But while I have had many visits to the paint store I have witnessed many people/shops coming in and buying that brand . before color sanding dont know how to load videos here..so fb links primer seal ..High Warning : excuse the vulgar language ..I'm from Chicago ou: https://www.facebook.com/frank.rex.7/videos/10209018960213287/ dbc high octane red ... https://www.facebook.com/frank.rex.7/videos/10209018994174136/ ..minutes right after the second coat https://www.facebook.com/frank.rex.7/videos/10209023486926452/
Looks great! I slacked a little on my color sanding, but the clear is do heavy I'm going to redo it (sand, cut, polish) next week and finally get a coat of wax on this thing. Yours looks really nice though, think you did it right the first time! But I feel your pain, I too don't trust myself with power tools on paint! I know it can be done, I'm just not willing to chance it either.
I was so concerned with getting the clear on so correct but I learned its all in the cut & buff .. I got dust in it , orange peel here and there ,some strange insect I have never seen before ,my sweat a big drop on the trunk lid ,a small run or two and air hose rub ....But it all cleaned up in the cut . next time If I ever do another one I will just lay it on heavy/heavier .... and when laying the base coat ...I learned to watch your flash times closely ....so no going back on a spot bcs it looks fun double coating after a minute ou: also that the prep is the most important of course ....all that block sanding payed off and never to paint a car all apart ....to many times of putting it together and apart ,wear out the bolt threads and high possibility of chipping paint ...I was lucky with that And never call your wife or gf into garage to help you put a door on ...well unless she has 12 years experience working in a body shop
Some unexpected situations /sequences of operations ....working on the side of fender that has all that heater /ac stuff forgot that it all has to be in place before bolting core and inner fender up ...so off we take the inner fender and core support ....again ou: by the time we done we will have worn out bolts took the evaporator box apart and resealed it,surprised how dusty and full of leaves and crud it was the ac blew out very good before I dismantled it ....the blower motor fan broke after falling off shelf so had to find a replacement...got lucky with a nos one on ebay and cheap :Brow: and also new 'Made In Canada " blower motor and heater core and a new blower resistor switch the old one was rusty and one coil wound burned out....and that round rubber thingamajigger cowling vent ....so tricky to get that thing correct at the firewall ,maybe bcs I didn't want to take my fender off
Core support installed and everything seems to be lined up pretty good just need to drop passenger door just a hair parts slowly seeming to disappear off of shelves ...
looks squared to me ....measured from top fender bolt on cowling to edge of front inside fender corner /crisscross
Frank will you be charging a fee to enter your garage now that your engine is near finished :grin::grin::grin::grin::grin:
finished wet sanding the whole car down and ready for buffing ....I burned through on 3 tiny areas very hard to fix but looks ok blends in ok when I spray w&g remover over it , and I now understand when they say if you burn its better just to paint the whole panel I used 800 in some spots of heavier orange peel but mostly 1000/2000/3000 across the board arm muscle was made and I believe I lost 10 pounds of body fat here is a pic of 1/4 panel with 1000 cut ..dull as usual and here is 1/4 panel with damp sanding w/3000 ....almost buffed out  expensive stuff that trizac but only 3 small sheets used on whole car ...it goes a long way some say 3000 is overkill but the process is way faster and color should pop with less buffing had to repaint the whole rear spoiler bcs I burned through it so easily ....I believe I only had 1 coat of clear on it bcs I was interrupted by garage visitors that day...yep blame them not myslef ou: so out came the 320/600 and the base & clear again
buffed out almost 1/2 the car last night and boy did that color pop ....so far so good no burning any corners yet ....ray: looks orange like with cheap phone pic but its a deep red
Sweeeeeeet. What machine are you using for a buffer? My old POS craftsman died on me over the Winter and I broke down and bought a nice Dewalt with a variable RPM setting. It really makes a difference in how I buff. AND I don't burn edges anymore.
I bought the harbor fright cheapie for wool pad since I think its a one time use and then a Porter cable 7424XP for polishing . My wool pad gets away from me so I'm very cautious with it (my first time buffing) the porter cable is safe as heck but slower process . Ended up with a super small burn on the front pillar so have to blend that in with some blender and worse part is I might have to repaint the hood bcs I have a cloudy-hazy 2ft x 4 inch stretch on the hood dont know why ... wet sanded it a bit more and a bit more aggressive with the wool still hazy like and very noticeable when looking straight on the hood
