I thought you were joking and put a couple heat registers from your house on the hood?:D

Maybe not one of your better quality pictures?(or its this 2008 computer?) But from the type of work it looks like you're capable of you just might be able to pull it off?

Of course I can pull it off LOL... I am the king of re-purpose ya know? If I was gonna put them on the roof, or trunk lid, I'd question my own sanity--- even deeper, Ha! Hell, each screw hole is a 9/64". If they dont look right a dab of filer and a squirt, and youd never know they were there. A 4" pair of holes under each one would be another story. Remember all those "Day 2" threds. This is a bit more advanced. The placement is also within 1/64" from the centerline AND the trailing edge.. Thats the German thing eh?

Here's a few pics of another install I did. Its on my65' Hatteras yacht a few years ago. These are on the side of the fiberglass flying bridge. There was always a moisture problem inside from rain water/poor drainage and zero ventilation making mildew. The vents cured that problem!

Back to the car; with decent paint on, above and around them, I think theyll look OK. GEEZ... Warshawski and Co. (J.C. Whitney) used to sell contact paper wood grain kits for these things! All I need is a set of curb feelers and mudflaps with reflectors and I can join the B.O.B. club. For the unknowing, thats city talk for Brotherhood of the Barrel. Thats where theres a trash fire burning in drum with 4-5 dudes passing a bottle in a paper sack trying to keep warm in an alley. Dont worry Derek, I havent turned yet! Maybe this coronavirus (chinaflu) thing will take care of business. Then Ill cover the car with 1/4" aluminum diamond plate LOL...:eek:

I tend to agree with the others about the louvers. I wouldn't do it but I have always been an advocate of doing what you want because it's your car so in the end it really doesn't matter what others want. However, I have to ask what the louvers are made out of. I ask this because if they are not sheet metal and can't be welded on, they will eventually crack. Maybe you'd have a chance if you installed them with todays high quality (and expensive) adhesive that they use on new cars. I can't tell you the name of it offhand because I don't work on new cars, but I'd be very careful. And drilling holes to see what they look like and then filling them in with filler if you don't like them, well, that's probably gonna show up later as well. Just sayin'...………………..

Hey Bill... Dare to be different right? These guys were die stamped out of some high grade (60 series?) aluminum and are probably around .080- .100" thick and less corrosion prone as a 50 series material. They are stamped with a rolled edge as well and so is each louver. Dont forget, that being from a boat, they have to withstand a certain measure of abuse without getting smashed to smithereens, like bumping a dock or a mooring post.

Heck... I was gonna cut a 14 inch hole in the hood to make a cowl induction unit fit. That wouldve wasted that hood and also looked pretty cruddy on the inside, not to mention becoming a structural issue. Theres always a trade off if you dont have that 100 ton die stamper ya know?

Ill get outside today and MIC these guys for kicks.

Go Kat, GO!!! Most of the adjectives I associate with this style is low, sleek, different, and although not obnoxiously large, should still get some attention by anyone that sees them and doesnt stand there pointing a finger saying "Thats pretty stupid looking, what was that guy thinking" attitude.

A few months ago I was seriously shopping for a glass add on scoop and they all looked stupid except the good ol; 70-72 chevelle cowl induction hoods. Then theres the "Nice Chevelle, what year is it" routine. I had almost bought locally a 1966 SS 396 hood just for the fake vents, but the guy dicked me around and after 2 weeks told me it was sold locally. It needed attention on the nose but the screw down vents were perfect and so was the chrome on them. He had the hood listed for 50.00 and I was a ready taker for that! Those deals screw down as well. Anyone "in the know" would immediately recognize them. Now, If anyone asks "where'd they come from?" that would show some legitimate curiosity. These louvers come in at less than an inch tall, and I think theyll give an aggressive look with out being outlandish. JMHO. Sleeker than a Stage-I hood or even some of the space ship looking Dodge crap, being period correct. Heck, they even came off a 1964 Pacemaker yacht. I have a set of Chris Craft naval bronze units that I had chrome plated 40 years ago, but they are only about 3" X 6". Beautiful pieces, but way too small. Maybe to replace the removed vent-ports? LOL.

Please dont draw any final conclusions until they are painted in line with the total paint scheme; then I'll run a vote here, "Should they stay or should they go..."
From the Ramones (!), "If they stay there will be trouble, If they go there will be double". Hmm. Hers a few gargle images z100.jpg ...

Did you look at the hood scoops on the 63 Pontiac LeMans's? GM stole the design from Ford lol. Ford used the hood scoop on their trucks in the 50's.

How about the Plymouth air grabber style hood scoop made to look like there's no scoop just a regular hood when its closed?

The thought never crossed my mind Mike! Opinions are like Azzhats; everyone should wear one LOL. So I had the nerve burn procedure yesterday, and the doctor said something about using and extra long device to get through the fat. I told her never mind the FAT, sharpen that puppy up so it can get through the THICK SKIN; we both had a chuckle outa that, then the anesthesiologist opened the valve. The gas man was her husband BTW...

Arnie Beswick actually came up with that. He showed up at the drag strip with one of those HD Ford hood scoops on his car and they wouldn't allow it, so he went to Pontiac with it. Pontiac in turn bought 50 of them from Ford and put their own part number on them so they would be NHRA legal. Back then where there was a will there was a way.

Here you go, Bill. It was a lot of work but it was worth it in the end. There is a photo of the adhesive I used on the scoop. I don't remember what it cost at that time but I know it was a little on the pricey side. Good stuff, though.

One thing I love about having a `65 Skylark is that you don't see them everywhere you go, like an orange `69 Camaro. The downside is it seems no one makes a darn thing for them so if you want it you have to build it yourself. Ok, no problem :D

Well now, thats the idea I am trying to bring to fruition. Everyone today is doing the clickety-clickety-clack-clack and ordering stuff from china. Thats hunky dory, but I am after a mid 60's custom look. I mean a built 455 and a for speed in a 6-n-a stick car aint a restoration by any stretch of the imagination. Somebody wanted some custom stuff in 1967, where'd ya go? Where ever you had to to make something work. J.C. Whitney was notorious for selling hideous custom crap. Wood grain on the sides with pipe organ speakers on the package tray? Right...

Today I got my 9.00 chinagun and air compressor to cooperate. Yesterday I had the primer mixed too hot and not thin enough. I need new bi-focals. The raw primer in the can is like 200W oil. Somewhere in the other shop I have a zahn cup; like Im gonna try and find that and time a pint of primer. The chinagun did a fantastic job today after figuring out the instructions. All the adjustments were refty roosy, lighty tighty. I threw the book away.

Spent an hour cleaning them louvers. Probably painted with some marine epoxy paint. Nothing cut it. One got sanded (lotsa work) and one got heated with the propane torch and stainless steel wire toothbrushed clean. Can ya tell the difference? Wait till this stuff gets sanded and painted. Now Im enjoying a cup of coffee feeling like I got something accomplished LOL...

Theres some pics of yesterday's Faux Pas and todays correction...
