    Media Blasting

Andy, You can have your car media blasted in whatever stage of assembly you like, even a driver. Reputable strippers (media strippers that is  ) have special tape and covers for the glass, chrome and open areas like the trunk that are not being stripped. They will tape up the door, hood, grill, tail lights and fender seams and you will be left with about a 1 inch strip of old paint around the seams that has to be sanded off. See Stripped Challenger However, having previously worked in the business for a couple years, I found the best way to strip older cars is to do it when it's a roller with no drivetrain, glass, interior or heater. This allows you to get most if not all of the leftover media out of those hidden compartments like the cowl, plus it allows the stripper to get all the winshield and window channels, door jambs and trunk lip. I am stripping my GS in stages...First I am stripping the bolt-on stuff like the doors, hood, fenders and trunk. Once those are done and in DP90, I will move on to the shell. Sometimes a stripper will give you a better deal if you bring him a fender or a door when he is already stripping something else, and he doesn't have to mask your parts...worth asking anyway.

As far as the bare metal, I use PPG DP epoxy primer on CLEAN bare metal. DA-ing is a great idea, but at a minimum wipe the metal down with silicone and wax remover before spraying. This also depends on your climate. Out here in SOCAL you can leave a car in bare metal a lot longer than in FL because of the relatively low humidity. Whatever products you choose to paint your car, try to stay with a SYSTEM where all products are designed to work together.

72GS4551adam12, Rob. I'm up in Escondido, where can you get media blasting done in the San Diego area?? Any idea what it costs for a full rolling car, all chrome and drive train removed? Maybe down in TJ?? This process sounds great for my latest '65 Skylark project.

    One step closer to paint

Last weekend the GS was media blasted, yesterday the first step was sprayed on, My Buddy is using some stuff called Reface by U-Pol which is sprayed on with 2.5 spraygun, stuff goes on thick and according to the manufacturer also works as a filler. Will let you know how it comes out.

Looks like it goes on without alot of overspray. 2.5 is a big tip though. I use a 2.0 for surfacer. Let us know how it sands.

Gary, I use Hot Rods & Custom Stuff in Escondido for my media blasting here in SD. For sandblasting and powdercoating I use R.W. Little in SD close to town on PCH...next thing to go there is my frame. Hope this helps,

Gary, I don't know of any other media blasting places in the SD area. There may be something in LA? The less the shop has to do, like taping, cleaning off grease ect, the less money it will cost you. Hot Rods does really nice work and is nationaly recognized for their street rod and resto work. Here is a link to their blasting info. Media Blasting Pretty cool pic of a vette being blasted. I've done a couple vettes myself and it's amazing how paint is stripped w/o hurting the fiberglass.

Rob, I called Hot Rod & Custom Stuff, price to media blast just the outside plus door jams was $1250, alittle higher than I expected...And then $125 per hr. for adding in other areas. And if you want them to shoot primer on, that works out to be about another $700! Might go over and check them out, but it defiantley is an expensive deal. Thinking about busting out the DA.....
