Got home early on Friday so I could install a woodgrain kit on the instrument cluster of my convertible. The old woodgrain was toast and the cluster looked like your typical 42 yar old Skylark dash. My original plan was to just take the old woodgrain off and slap the new stuff on. Well, as usual, it turned into a weekend project. After taking a look at the dash, I deceided to just take the cluster out and give it a once over. Since I have the process of taking dashes out to a science in a Skylark, so it didnt take very long at all to have it out.

Once inside in the warmth of my basement, I took the cluster apart. I polished all the lenses insid and out. The clock lens was fogged up white, so I replaced it with a nice clear one. I Simple Green'ed the plastic housing and went over it with a Testors silver paint pen. Polished all the plastic chrome and put it all back together. I also took the radio apart, cleaned and polished the chrome and lens, and bench tested it. while everything was apart, I tested and replaced some of the burnt out bulbs. There were a few.

I had to trim the woodgrain ever so slightly fit it to fit just right. I think it came out pretty good. Not bad for an investment of less that a 100 bucks. I cant wait to take it on a drive at night!!

Great job Jason! Those woodgrain decals always seem to require a bit of trimming. Had to do this with my set as well.

Thanks! It just goes to show that not every project needs to be expensive or take days/ weeks to complete.

Bought a 71 Skylark convertible last summer. White with a black top and interior. Someone put chrome Torque Thusts on it with BFG's. Its a little rusty, but the floors are solid, its all one color, the top goes down and it runs well. Its just a knock around car to keep my sanity over the winter. I think I put the top down once. It'll be for sale come spring/ summer. I have automotive ADD and im bored with it already.

Where did you get the woodgrain kit? Seems like I remember someone on the board selling them.
