    racing lawn mowers

Anyone build one of these yet? Rumor is that the common rider can do 50mph easy once you reverse the pulleys. Stock they have big ones on the trans n small ones on the engine.

I've read about it and seen one of the shows they did on it on tlc. Once you take off the blades, undercarriage and the other "mower" parts and play with tranny, they can FLY! I had a lawnmower that I was playing with awhile ago but another family member (ahem!!!) decided to play with it and completely ruin the engine. It was already lightened enough that it would pop wheelies at ease.

It was kind of a loaded question. Buddy found an old 2 speed 5hp rider in the trash. it did run but was old enough where the blades did not disengage. Which made it hard to start in grass. He used for for a year or so n I brought it home tonight.

Of course I removed the deck n blades. I had an extra set of main crank pulleys off another old mower but it was to long. Nothing would fit or match so I made them fit. Reversed the pulleys as much as I could. biggest on crank, smallest on trans.

Bent the heck out of the old drive pulley trying to get it off. Used an old shock stud extender to move my idler / tensioner pulley out.

Its 5am and I don't want to piss anyone off. I wonder how its gonna react. Though I wish it was a 5 speed trans instead of a 2. Might not go as fast.

That looks good but what about that belt, are you going with the ribs facing out? It looks like it will rub on that bar.

Some of this should help you out.

"On a grass track, our lawnmowers reach speeds of 40-60 MPH. "

This site even has some vids of mower racing:

Along with a little fun: (Not me although I've experienced the "lawnmower wheelie" before.)

Let me (and anyone else that's interested) know how this turns out! :TU:

Thats the belt that was for the blade drive. It is in the same spot where it was. it was n still is rubbing on that bar. that bar is worn 1/8in or so. Its a v belt and its just ribbed on top.

That is as far as I got. Haven't even got it started. I wont mess with the governor till I see how it goes.

I would't go lawn mower racing more like Pulling! HUGE knobby tires and big 23 hp 2 cylinder Briggs.

    From the east.

Saw the part about racing lawn mowers.
I read in the local paper in the Mid- Atlantic area that it is a big thing.
Article said some would do 85 mph in straight away, is that crazy or what.

nope with geoshity you must copy n paste the link into a blank window to view it. Clicking on the link even into a new window won't work. They are famous for that. That was no one can link to your files. It must be opened in a fresh blank Page.

Someone told me that on a downhill course they have clocked lawnmowers near 200mph???

I have yet to test mine. It has some weak spark and my buddy said it ran fine but needs either to start. So I gotta get some [been lazy today] or do it right n yank the flywheel and clean up the points. I know it has dirty worn points. There isn't a lawn mover over 10 years old that doesn't need it. Why they hide them under the fly wheel is beyond me. That is the main reason they never get serviced.

Well I should of gotten to work earlier but I was successful at getting the fly wheel off. The cluck came off easy with a big hammer. Few wacks n the flywheel was off. Cleaned up the points n re-wired it all.

It has a nice fat spark now. It fired up with in two pulls but I am to nice of a guy to run a mower at 12:30am.

I also had good sense to wire up a kill switch while I was at it. I should know around 8am just how well things turned out.

And I did end up yanking that bar. There is no reason for it to touch the belt. Really no reason being there.

Need one of them slow tractor signs so I can drive on the road. Course I may be the one passing and not them.

Let us know how that goes, I bet you'll fly since your more than a bit past 1:1.

Yea I did go full bore on that. There was a good size pulley on the crank one already but I spliced a bigger one on.
Id bet I am close to 1:3

But you know. Gotta do it Tool Man style.

I got one / had one. It is where I got the bigger lower crank pulley. I cut them both in half [ as I could not get the old one off] and the craftsman one slip fit right over the other one and I tacked it in 3 places good.

There would be no way to mount one on the trans. it has a small dia input. It was easier to just weld it up like the crank pulley.

Though so far its been no luck. I have cleaned n gaped the points. I have nice spark. I cleaned the tank and carb. New oil n gas. Good plug. But the sucker will not run for more then a few sec. I have pulled every muscle n my body trying. Two nice blisters. [ its a pull start rider?]

So since everything is OK it has to be the fuel pump. Its a BS 5hp with the tank mounted carb. So it must pump the gas by motor pulses.

it just spits n sputters for a sec n conks out.

Check your throttle, that has been my problem with two of the engines i have had to fix. Makes me kinda mad once i go thorugh the whole engine and find out you need to open the throttle. Goodluck

BTW where did you find the tractor?
