buddy found it in the trash. The blades would not disengage so it was hard to start. He used it for a year and then I brought it home.

But it did run well last year.

My riding lawnmower wouldn't run too well until I played with the throttle a little bit, a little slipping and adjusting and it would run fine.

    lawn mower racing

Last fall me and my son Doug went to our first demolition derby lawn mower event, some local guys started doing it a couple years ago and they do it twice a year, very informal, but crazy.Just a bonfire ,beer ,and bragging rights, never laughed so hard in my life.It was video taped and I'm trying to get a copy.
These guys add armor and battering rams to the mowers, get going real fast and just collide with each other????Till only one can move! Its amazing.

I just can't stop thinking about this thread.
The pic of the pulleys above looks like a nightmare though.

I think I would just hook the belt up direct. Like on a car.
Then put a go-kart clutch on the output shaft of the tranny.
Then rig up some soft of trigger throttle.

Wheelie bars will probably be a must.

As a kid I flipped our rear engine rider all the time.
A quick shift from reverse to 1st would peel out or flip you off.
I use to get the biggest kick from riding around in 5th cutting the grass at top speed.

Maybe I can recapture my youth if I can make one go 50?
    Or kill myself.

    Here's a quick shot of the go-kart I built back in '93 when I was 14.

The mower was a '79 International Harvester Cub Cadet "85 Special" with a 8HP Briggs...

Simply swapping pullies wouldn't work, as the output shaft on the motor was 3/4" and the input shaft on the trans was 5/8". I found a pulley at Napa intended for a self propelled MTD that worked on the trans, and I got a new pulley for the engine at Bearings, Inc.

I also put a bigger sprocket on the output shaft of the trans, going from an 8 tooth sprocket to a 14 tooth sprocket.

This is one fast mower, I've never attempted to try an actual top speed run due to severe instability over 30 MPH. Theoretically, it should go just over 50 MPH but without some serious frame and suspension mods, I'll never try it.

Regarding the post above where the "Pulsa-Jet" carb wasn't pushing fuel properly, you can pull the tank and check the mounting surface of the carb to the tank for flatness. It doesn't take much to keep these from working right.

Does anyone out there have any good Large, 1 piece "Flo-Jet" carbs sitting around? Mine got filled with water over the winter and froze, crushing the brass float....

got a part number on that carb and/or an engine model type and trim of the engine it came off of? I maybe able to help you out. (I work at B&S) :Brow:

you gotta see some of the stuff that comes back in thru here. lawnmower, races turbo charged v twins. there was a vehicle that looked like a gokart here with a single bladed mower deck under it. pretty neat but prolly a serious safety issue.

The carb is off of a Model 191707, Type 5635-03, Code 79112109.... And sadly enough I didn't even have to look those #'s up! I went to the local crooked Mower Shop and they tried to sell me a float for some outrageous amount, like $50 or $60.

I'm using it on a '90 12.5HP I/C engine.... I don't think it's the proper carb but it always seemed to work pretty good... I put the old '79 8HP motor into storage when I got the '90 12.5HP for free from my neighbor.

B&S wouldn't happen to have any spare parts kicking around for an old Model 5S, would they?

    Thanks!!

does that carb look like this one? if so to buy the float at a dealer it's like 7 bucks. we have 7k of them here in the warehouse. let me know if the carb looks right.

also is it pump or gravity feed?
