I have been wanting to devise a set up to bring cold air into the engine for some time now. The factory air cleaner won't fit with my SP1, and we all know the factory system isn't very effective anyway. I got a few ideas from my fellow club member Steve(71stagegs). He was using a Spectre Performance Air Cleaner that he had modified so that it would clear the Q-jet accelerator pump arm. He had also moved one of the snorkels so that they were closer together. At that time, Spectre only had an air cleaner with the snorkels 180* apart. It fit very nicely under his hood with a Performer intake and 1" spacer. We checked the fit on my car with the SP1 and it cleared. When I looked at the Spectre website, they now had an air cleaner with the snorkels 120* apart, and it was low profile. I ordered that air cleaner, and 3 sections of 4" expandable hose. On the passenger side, it was easy to route the hose in front of the oil filter. I had removed the A/C compressor because I never use it, and the freon had leaked out anyway. On the driver's side, it was a lot tighter. The fan shroud and steering box didn't leave much room. I cut a small section from my fiberglass reproduction shroud, and squished the tubing a bit, and got it to go through. Steve gave me the idea to integrate the tube openings into my fiberglass front spoiler. I cut a few holes into the spoiler, used some 4" PVC plastic tubing, painted everything black, and sealed it up. I just need to give the spoiler a fresh coat of paint and it will blend in even nicer. I think this will make a nice difference on a really cold day. It should give a true ram air effect, as well as get some cold air into the engine. Haven't gotten a chance to really test it out, and the track will have to wait for next year. What do you guys think?

looks good. We ran one for a while. I will be anxious to hear what difference it makes at the track for you. Keep us posted on that.

I'm gathering parts for a very similiar mod, but I was planning on putting some fine mesh in between the spoiler and the duct work. I think it will not only look nicer but I'd hate for some road debris to end up in my carb somehow. Do you think thats a good idea or bad?

The air cleaner comes with a good air filter (looks like a K&N) I'm not worried about anything getting into the carburetor. I can easily check the filter and duct work. I can fit my hand in the ducting easily.

The battery is in the way on the passenger side anyway.

What et and mph did it gain for you in 1/4 mile?

Don't know, won't get to the track until next year. It's got to be better than inducting hot under hood air.

I have the 180* setup and I like it alot! However, I just crammed the hoses below the fan shroud so it isn't as slick as yours. I hope you used some aluminum foil tape and sealed up the bottom of the air cleaner. That gap it has is bogus.

I don't think there is much of a gap there, but I will check it next time I'm under the hood.

    Us fat guys need ac!!!!!

Looks great Larry. I bet it gets you a couple tenths at least!

    Cold air = hp.

What has been your best et and mph until now? And when did you run your best time? Spring? Fall? And how many years ago?

12.20@110.65 with the Q-jet, 12.119@111.98 with the AED 1000HO carb. Both times at Cecil County in October 2007. I am now lighter because of the removed A/C compressor, hoses, and condenser.

    Sweet Larry.

I'm right there with you. I went 12.20 at 109.8 a couple weeks ago.

Very anxious to see your results.

Looks great and I'll bet it will work great, too. I posted this at BPG, I'll add the same comments here.

I'd still use a coarse (rather than fine) mesh at the inlets just to keep stuff out, including road kill. Also make sure the ductwork is protected somehow from unfriendly surfaces. You could use rubber or foam pads in areas such as the AC bracket. Anyplace the duct contacts something is where it will rub through due to vibration.

    Very nice work.

    Devon

P.S. The wire mesh I had on the inlets of my similar setup kept a bat from getting to the air cleaner. Much easier to deal with dead bat at the inlet!

    Thanks Devon,
I will look into some kind of mesh at the inlets.:TU:
