Thanks Jim, I usually do run without an air cleaner. The last time I was at E-town, I did just that, but I cracked my header tube on the first round and was done for the day. I also forgot to pull the center insulation out of the hood, and as you can guess, it sucked down into the carb, and the car nosed over at the top end of the track. Still ran a 12.74 @ 104, but that is way off from what I usually run on a nice day. I have tried no air cleaner, and my drop base 360* air cleaner at Cecil. There was very little difference in the times, and no MPH difference to speak of. This Spectre air cleaner sits exactly at the same height as my open air cleaner, so I have high hopes for it. There will definitely be a ram air effect, and it will be outside temperature air, so it should do something. I will definitely address the gap under the air cleaner with some duct tape to seal it up. A few guys have already mentioned that to me. Also, the Poston openings were a lot smaller than what I have here. One of the guys on Long Island has a Poston Spoiler that I looked at. My set up is bigger and better.
Tell that Robot he can bite me:laugh:  If he doesn't stop complainin, I'll take his head next and make a see through air cleaner out of it. Looks to be the right shape.
prolly the correct reverse-dish for the drop base on the underside as well. Go for it, just watch out for the lightening bolts
I would've thought about putting those cone-type K&N filters on the end near the spoiler... and maybe no filter up by the carb. obviously you wouldn't want orange filte... well actually the car is kinda orange... heh
I could not get it to work on the street. For some reason, and I could not figure out why, fuel would accumulate on top of the accelerator pump of the Q-jet. I have not heard of this happening to others, and Specter Performance could not help me. I have not given up on it yet, but testing it at the track is not going to happen any time soon.
That is very odd and the farthest thing I expected to hear. I assume you disassemble the entire unit and went back to the original setup.
No Todd, I removed the system. For some reason, it would make my Q-jet leak fuel from the accelerator pump stem. Never figured it out. The only thing I could think of was possibly, the fuel bowl was being pressurized. I intend to put it back on with the AED 1000 and try it again. Another thing on the list for this season.
Hi Larry, I use a Ram Air Box setup on my car(now with a 950 Biggs Holley).Initially I was utilizing a Q-Jet.I noticed I was leaking fuel out of the carb and put it down as pressure the carb didn't like.I solved it by hole-sawing three or four holes through the air box on the firewall side.Didn't affect noticeably the cool air benefit of the setup and ended the leaking. With a Holley -type carb no holes are required.I made the holes about 1/2 inch or so.Try modifing your box (and save the cut out plastic if you are as anal as I am!!). Cheers, Rod
Thanks Rod, I was thinking of simply extending the Q-jet vent tube up through the top of the air box.
I tried a ram air setup on mine years ago, 2-4" hoses to the headlight buckets. It ran better with a filter installed, at the track I picked up mph but lost on ET, off it came, this was with a 800 cfm q-jet. Never tried it again. You also need some type of wide mesh inlet screen to keep bugs and trash out while running on the street.
I have the old poston ram air spoiler on my convertible, but this is not a track car so I can't tell about performance improvements......I figure it is probably better than the factory set up. looks cool on the car also. i was trying to go for the buick "Hurst" edition that was never produced theme....so it works with the car. Good spoiler, but as Jim said you ave to add a center brace or it will rip off under pressure. I wish these were still made by someone.....I would like to put one on my other GS.
How about the 1968 factory optional cowel ram air. Anyone have drag test for this cool Buick engineered kit. http://www.v8buick.com/showthread.p...o-Aircleaner-Adapter&highlight=1968+cowel+air
