Used to be nice. I’ve ordered from RA quite a bit with only 1 issue.
Liked their website & always get the parts I ordered.

Now(at least in my area of CO) due to a city/state tax issue RA will no longer deliver to my address.

I was trying to order some parts today & same issue. So I went to the machine that is Amazon, got the parts I want for $3 and some change cheaper with quicker delivery. Oh wello_O.

I know that I have to pay shipping from point of shipping for each package, but as Tim stated, cheaper that here. I have had no problems with Rockauto.

My wife recently ordered two identical items from Amazon (free shipping with Prime) and they shipped two separate packages. Same time, place and origin. I wonder how that made sense?

I agree with this, but shipping can be a profit maker for the shipper. Yesterday I ordered a small, lightweight item that cost $28. When I got to the checkout they wanted $18 and change for the shipping. The item would fit in a large, padded envelope. I then went to Amazon Prime and ordered exactly the same item for $30 with free shipping.

I bought an oil pan plug from Amazon for $1.46, free shipping. They delivered it to my door in 2 days. They sure didn't make any money on that deal!

I'll use Rock Auto, Amazon, e-Bay or order online and pick up at the local Advance Auto (with 25% off coupon). Usually depends on how quickly I need the item.

I spoke to a senior employee in the local post office (which is also a distribution center). I told him that I had heard President Trump berate the USPS for shipping for Amazon below cost. I went on to say that I had a hard time believing that. He told me that Trump was correct. Finally, something that I agree with him on. It is stupid.

I believe that all shippers give large discounts to large businesses to get their business. That's why it ticks me off when RA changes your order so that it comes from multiple warehouses. RA is making HUGE profits on shipping.

Many companies who ship their products charge the purchaser "list" shipping rates while the company is charged discounted rates by the carrier and the company pockets the difference This is considered a profit center. Shipping insurance is also approached in this same way, customer is charged UPS or FEDEX insurance rate per hundred or thousand, while shipper has separate insurance policy through Ocean Marine policy, with an insurance company at much lower cost per hundred or thousand. Another profit center. Some of you may remember a similar scenario with phone services where "Aggregators" would contract with the major telecom carriers for X amount of usage, at a highly discounted cost, and then sell out "discounted" phone plans on an individual basis to customers and pocket the difference.

Amazon it is. Official announcement was made today. Cuomo has long forgotten about upstate NY. He probably doesn’t even know about Amazon moving in here

I'm surprised that happened without any kind of parade. Maybe it was kept quiet to keep people from protesting it. A facility of that size will change your community big time for the worse. Look forward to around the clock truck traffic and all sorts of transients hanging around. Undoubtedly Amazon will not pay a cent in property taxes and will get a huge break on state taxes all while creating jobs that pay just above the slave rate. They probably have a 10 or 15 year contract for the taxes and when it expires they will restructure and close the warehouse. That will leave behind a huge eyesore of a building that will be vacant until it collapses.

For those of you who don't know, Rock Auto is strictly an online storefront. They have no "warehouses" of their own. They have no inventory of their own. They are not packing boxes for you.. although they have worked hard to give you that illusion.

They simply made a very usable website, and can offer lower prices than a competing vendor with actual facilities and inventory.. which costs money.

Their only expenses are price of the parts they buy to fill orders, whoever it takes to monitor and host the website, and if they are fools, then they rent or lease commercial space to have their offices in.. but I would be willing to bet those "offices" are in their homes... or in a building they bought for investment purposes.

They are not a true retailer.

And they actually don't pretend to be..

I have found that when you add the shipping, which is the real downside of their business plan, that their prices are no better than I can buy it locally, and ya, the warehouse stuff is a shell game.. they are making money on shipping charges.... I often buy from an online seller who ships for free or low cost.. I buy way more auto parts with my Amazon prime membership, than with RA.. Rock auto is a nice resource to locate a part number. That is what I use it for when I am looking for parts for my truck or something..

...overall good experience, but like many vendors, have to compare prices with shipping. Returns have always been good, whether original or core, just have to watch dates and pack according to directions. Refunds have been prompt...

I have no problem with Rockauto. The only time I had to return anything was a 95 Roadmaster starter I was using to replace one of Jamie's starters. Turned out my problem was my flex plate, not the starter. They warrantied the starter and the return process went smoothly for me. About 6 months ago, I saw some rubber valve cover gaskets on RA. They advertised at 4.81/pr (wholesaler closeout) with 5 sets left. I ordered all 5 sets. When I received them, I opened one box and discovered cork gaskets, not rubber. The Felpro box was marked correctly (VS50004R). I then opened the rest of the boxes. 3 of them contained the rubber gaskets, 2 were cork. I then went online to return the 2 sets of cork gaskets explaining they were boxed wrong. RA told me they would issue a refund, and they did. They instructed me to await instructions on how to return the 2 sets I didn't want. They also said if I didn't hear from them, I could keep the gaskets. Never heard from them, and I did.:) 33.58 - 13.44 = 20.14

...this is now a common business model, Uber and Grubhub come to mind, they're just a "platform," participants are ultimately responsible for everything else. An aside, food delivery services are taking advantage of independent restaurants' attempt to shore up their businesses by participating in food delivery phenom. For their part, delivery is taking a super-sized bite of restaurant profits...

I've ranted about them elsewhere here. I've gone full circle with them. When I first learned of them I loved them. But over time I've come to dislike them. The selection is still a huge plus. But now it's the only plus. First if you buy something less than $10ish (that you want to return), you're stuck with it unless you want to spend more to ship it back than what it's worth. Second if you have a big order, you have to pay shipping from multiple warehouses. They don't charge you for just one shipment. The forcing multiple shipments is new to me but I believe it. It's clear to me they are going down the maximize profits above all else route of business.

I see some people are saying use Jegs or Summit. Are they good for routine maintenance parts? I though they were only for mod/speed stuff.
