Though I did cure vapors on a 79 duster once by stick a electric fuel pump in the trunk to feed the stock block pump. A 3 hose and return line system is better but I assume the extra pressure feeding the pump was able to push the vapor though with no noticeable problem.

You can get a 12-16 gph pump from autoxone for $20 and just some wire n a switch and you have a 20 mins fix. Then run the 3 hose system later when you have time.

HMMMMMMMM, wonder if the tank vent is blocked? Drive it again. When it messes up again, open the gas cap. If you hear a big whooosh, you've found the problem. Then go home and drill several 1/8 holes in the gas cap.

Still look at the ignition coil. It may be getting hot because of resistance in the windings causing it to overheat. There should be an ohm (resistance) test for these coils just to check them for continuity, however I do not know of it off hand.

I believe that Stage 1 pump has 2 hoses...although my car is a non-AC car so it does not have a return...I have it blocked on the fuel pump. That has not provided a problem before.

For what it is worth, yesterday when it happened, I had just less than 1/2 tank of gas (Shell 93 octane), this morning I filled up the tank. The gas cap is a year old and is a proper vented cap for a 72.

did you change your fuel filter? i bought a skylark that would start to cut out after a little while, turned out to be just a dirty fuel filter.

    Fuel filter

John, yes, when I did the fuel system I installed a K&N billet fuel filter and removed the stock Q-jet filter.

I can verify the fuel filter thing. I had a 74 Apollo that went into a whole mess of stalling fits on the way home once. Was just a cruddy filter.

    HEI Coils

Are all GM HEI coils the same? The parts guy I spoke with said that they are not...that Buicks have a "different rotation" (his words...not mine) and they they do not have a coil for me in stock. They are one of the largest GM dealers in the area! and his price was $67 and could get it in a "day or two" UGH!:Dou:

Paul, make sure the filter is not up against anything hot, same for the fuel lines. Make sure no lines are kinked....like back at the tank....when hot they will kink more.
A mech pump without a return line is gonna be touchy when it comes to vapor lock est with a rebuilt motor making some more ponies.....

also, the 72 cap is not vented. 72 uses a vent stand between the rear seats (on a hardtop at least) Gotta have vent to run....

    Good luck buddy....

I'm voting for the fuel filter

A plugged filter will starve the car at cruising speed and allow it to idle OK.

Clean out that K&N (I'm assuming they are cleanable). I'll bet you'll find some rust hunks and crud in there.

    GStage1 Always looking for parts!

Sounds like a fuel problem. Perfect example of the need to install an in-line glass filter so you can see fuel coming to the carb. Discard the in-carb "el cheap" paper filter. HEI use the same coils. Just get a new cap, rotor and coil for a GM HEI. They are all the same. Could be coincidental that you may have a fuel and ignition problem at the same time.

OK, I got a coil at lunch, now I will try to change it before I drive home in I-95 rush hour traffic (UGH)

The fuel lines are the blue aeroquip lines that JW sells and there are no kinks.
The fuel filter is the billet K&N and it is cleanable, just unscrew it to disassemble. So I will do that tonight as well. It is actually located down underneath the car right at the gas tank. The gas tank was BRAND NEW just 18 months ago (along with the rest of the fuel system upgrade)...heck it is still shiny! I guess it could still have rust and sediment in it though...

There is NO paper fuel filter in the Q-Jet...that was out of there long ago.

Thanks all for the suggestions...please keep them coming as I would really prefer to drive this thing out to Salem.

Just out of curiosity could you use a 71 and prior vented cap to help cure a vapor lock problem.

Paul, good luck. Is the stock vent system in place?

    Hope the coil does it.

    Vent

Bruce, the stock vent is in place...I may have misspoken about the vented cap...

Geez, I hope this works! I am going to look so "redneck" fixing my car in the parking lot at work!

Screw em Paul....I opened my hood at work the other day and some lady asked if I had car trouble. All I was doing was checking the oil. I guess it was nice of her but some people are embarrased to be seen with their hood up....
So is that cap vented or not and are the vents lines on the tank?
Some people plug em and have problems....

    AAARRRGGHH!

    Dammit this is frustrating!

OK...I replaced my coil in the parking lot at work. It started right up so I jump on I-95 heading home. I get about 8 miles into the trip...again...oil pressure is fine...water temp 195*...there it goes...dies again. I coast to the shoulder and put on the 4 ways. I jump out, pop the hood and sit for about 10 minutes...close the hood, jump in the car and it fires up and I drive the rest of the way home.

Regarding the gas cap...I looked at it and itt does not say "vented" on it...so maybe it is the right cap. Here are 2 pics of it if that helps.
