I got home last night to find the issue in the mailbox. I opened it up and saw the article on you and that great red ride. Congrats.

Now I'm waiting for Bob Palma to write a letter to the mag so we can see what the authors got wrong in the article.:error: :Smarty: :TU:

Knowing this in advance, the author had Bob and Ted Harbit provide ALL the info regarding the technical aspect of the Studebaker. But I bet ~artistic license~ was employed somewhere in the article. If so, Bob will be more than happy to take them to the woodshed!

Magazines are known to screw things up, even if the owner gave them the proper info. Ask the guys here who've had features on their cars.

It's always nice to see PS participants in the media. :D

Geoff Stunkart(sp?) and Steve Stratham did the ones on my car. They sure got it right.

I finally got mine a day ago. The Mail Lady around here must be reading it first.

    Nice article.
    Congrats, Ted.
    Keep on racing.

:TU: True, Frank: The article text was thoroughly reviewed before going to press. Dan Strohl is probably the best writer at Hemmings, so I was pleased to see him get the assignment. We sent him a ton of suggestions from the first draft and only two minor errors (implications, really) slipped through unchanged:

    1. He said the Studebaker V-8 had grown to 289 cubic inches in 1957. It should have been by 1957, because the 289 was introduced in 1956 for all President sedans and wagons, and the one-year-only Sky Hawks. (The shorter-stroke 259 was still used in Commanders and the one-year-only Power Hawks.)

    2. On Page 73 he says, "The Granatelli Brothers took the paradigm a bit further in 1964." They actually did it in 1963, for the 1964 model year.

We really can't complain about the above two items in the big scheme of things. The article was nicely done and they have made excellent progress getting material reviewed by competent folks within each marque before going to press.

Indeed, at the last minute I had sent Dan copies of correspondence I had with Ray Tanner Motors and Floyd Mendenhall (page 74) concerning the car they campaigned in 1963, The Whistler. I was pleased to see Dan squeeze in that mention after the article was pretty much done.

I was only 17 years old when I wrote Ray Tanner in 1963! The dealership sent me a nice 8X10 glossy of The Whistler at speed on a strip, which I still have. Matt Litwin, Editor of the Vintage Racers column in Hemmings Muscle Machines, has indicated he wants to use that correspondence and the large period photo in a future HMM. ['Can't have too much Studebaker in one issue without the BBB (belly-button-boys) getting all nervous, you know!]

Thanks for everyone's nice comments about Ted and the article on The Stude Tomato. (We have no idea where Dan got "Flyin' Tomato," but surmise he thought it up while doing the article!) :TU: BP

Now if only they would do the same for the technical advice given in Ray Bohacz's column.

[Yeah, I probably just butched his name, so I shouldn't throw stones.]
