Dad's car is soon to be painted he has the decal stripe kit any tips N tricks on getting those laid right. I figure I'll ask early Thanks the car will be painted in base coat clear coat. So all yellow then stripes with clear over everything. I know it isn't correct but that's how pops wants it Thanks If you want to give me a buzz cause it's easier that's fine with me I'll pm you my number
Use some activator in the base or spray a coat of base clear with activator over the yellow let it dry for about an hour, then use a couple drops of dove dish soap in a spray bottle then apply a mist coat to the panel AND the back side of the decal, smooth out bubbles with spreader, rub briskly with your hand when it starts to get warm you can remove the cover. Take your measurements b4 you start and lay pieces of tape where you want to land the stripe and pull and lay the whole panel don't try to do a few in at a time it will NEVER be straight
You should consider talking to Mark at "then and now". I put him in touch with the man who painted every single GSX that was ever built in Flint Michigan. Mark (404-642–1729) has all of the inside information regarding GSX STRIPES. There are plenty of urban legends out there, and then there is the truth… Dwayne is aware of this information as well.
My brother had his '72 GS cloned to a GSX. The bodyman/painter marked out the stripes & masked when/where necessary and painted them, then clear coated the whole car in about 8 hours. Looked fabulous!
I've never used the decal kit, the 4 I've done I've painted and cleared over, going to do them correctly on my X this fall
OHC Joe if you call Mark at Then and Now would you please post the response? My car will be stripped in the next couple weeks. I am interested in any help making sure the stripes come out correctly. Jim
The Red, is Bright Red, PPG 2546 only available in Omni. So I went with a high end fleet paint mixed to the PPG number for the black I am using Ditzler Hot Rod Black, HRB9700. PPG says it will work better than the 898-9881 with the 20/80 matte. The Hot Rod Black has a 20% to 30% gloss. I bought my GSX new and it has always had a matte black stripe. So no clear over the stripe. Jim
Thanks for the information Jim.... But I think my dad is going to want to do the hood stripes all gloss.... And cover the whole car with a bunch of clear as well.... Also is the matte stripes hard to keep clean
Ooh don't let him paint stripes gloss. This turns things fuzzy when the discussions on restoration starts.
What's the best way to apply the stencil After the yellow base has been applied Do you use a soapy water and set the stencil in place What gets painted first the red then the black stripe.
