Tips on painting 68 GS grille ?

Decided the GS grille I have needs a paint job before going on with my new bumper. SO, those of you who have painted a 68 version, where would you start? Paint the black first, or start with the argent on the main body? I've got plenty of painters tape to get started masking, but I'm not sure which way would be more practical, or maybe easier?

I'm using Krylon dull aluminum and flat black. Go with thin/light coat, and respray if needed? Or does one coat do the job... I'm guessing light coats is the way to go, recoating one section before moving on. Any tips are welcome. :TU:

    Sure is quiet in here...

Anyway, I think the grille is finally spotless, or close enough to paint at least. Assuming it is in original paint, looks like the black on the slats was sprayed last, considering the black overspray around the edges of the slats, onto the silver. I was thinking of the other way around, but maybe a bit of overspray onto the silver would not look as bad as silver overspray onto the black slats??? :Do No:

Painters spray dark over light as coverage is better.
When I painted mine, I sprayed the silver first, then the black.
Back side first, then the front.
Even, full pass coats from all 4 angles.
Light coats first for coverage, last coat wet.
A dry finish will eventualy trap dirt in the texture and always look dirty.
The smoother the finish, the better, even if its flat or semi-gloss paint.

When I repainted mine I painted the silver first and then the black because it was easier to mask off the silver.

Ok Chris, I'm assuming you're done painting, so lets see some pics!

I did spend quite a bit of time masking mine, almost ready to spray some dull aluminum.

I'll have to take some this weekend. I'm on call all week and band rehersals. I have no time except sitting on the puter here at work.

I'll go with the silver as well , I started with the silver for my dash cluster essentially for the masking job .

What king of gray do you guys use ?

Gray? I've seen Krylon dull aluminum recommended a number of times, that's what I'm using.

Finally sprayed my dull aluminum today. All I can say is WOW, it looks amazing with new paint! Maybe I'm doing this the hard way, but I masked off the black for this, didn't really want to spray aluminum where it wasn't intended or needed. Did like 3 coats, will check it tonight for coverage and respray if necessary. Then on to masking for the black.

Anyone clear coat their grille after a repaint?

This has taken a depressing turn. Somehow I overlooked the fine print on the Dupli Color can that it was not for outside use and was not a durable finish. So I allowed it a week, then resprayed with another Dupli Color that fit the bill. Unfortunately, the nozzle was a piece of crap, maybe it was too warm and windy, and it looks like sh*t in a # of areas. Real rough finish. I'm thinking of sanding it down in those places, pulling the masking off, and just spraying it ALL black. It's been real hard to find a day with low enough humidity to consider spraying at all. Sorry, no pics for now.

    Dave,
Sorry to hear about your problem.
Now you guys see why I use PPG paints. The time required to prep and mask a grille makes you only want to do it once.

I still remember the old saying. " There is never enough time to do it right. But there is always enough time to do it over."

Yeah, I don't have time to do it over either.

I'm guessing you have a paint booth and don't use spray cans.
