How terrible and scary, sounds like a piece of electrical tape over the VIN and reinstate OnStar for all the DMAX folks, and anybody else! Dobermans and 12 gauges for everyone, actually I'd rather have a rifle with a laser to be sure I didn't miss the target!
how big is this reservation? can someone google this on a map for me? i think this is the one they're talking about, Six Nations just SE of Brantford, ON: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&sou...=FcjvkAIdAFg5-w&cid=157921337540468422&li=lmd
Zoom out two clicks (also hit the F11 button) and you will see there is more area covered by the reservation to the east of where the Google link directs you to.
Ok here is an idea of how close it all is the address you see is the track.. When I heard about this I was just sick. Just hope it is recovered no matter what condition. Paul
No need to cut a key on the GMT800 trucks...and OnStar can still pinpoint a vehicle even if it has lapsed...but, the majority of the Dmax's don't have the OnStar equipment (2 of our 4 don't), as I believe it mandates the LT+ interior...? Pull injector relay, or ignition relay, or even the ecm...which sucks if you've simply stopped to eat, fuel, etc...
This absolutely sucks fellas. I have been looking at a system called "snitch". Itcosts under $200 yr. Small gps device hard-wired and hidden in your car. You can see real-time info.such as speed miles driven and location to a few feet thanks to the eye in the sky. The only decision you have to make is whether or not you wanttowait for the cops to arrive as YOU stake out your own RIDE!!!!!!:af:
there are GPS based, geo fence systems on the market, for awhile now actually,,, they can be hard wired into an ECM to shut off the engine if the vehicle moves as little as 6 feet, there are a LOT of construction equipment tractors with them, I actually sold a neat piece (actually several) that was geo programmable and I could shut off a tractor from hundreds of miles away with a cell phone...
phuc!!!! This is horrible news to hear. FYI, my 2004.5 Dmax has LT interior and is Onstar equipped. I bought it used and this is how it came. I never subscribed to the Onstar service.
Chevy, They can be battery operated or hard wired to the car. Secret wire to several 12 volt sources encased in a metal box, up in the dash, with battery backup? Ah, yeah, take my car 2 miles intno-mans land, Idare ya! :blast:
Yeah, I knew OnStar was standard on LT interior'd trucks, but hadn't seen an LS with it...but after doing some looking, you could order it apparently. Neither of our LS trucks have it, but both our LTs do...we've never subscribed either. Jim: I hadn't considered the construction systems...around here, it seems whenever the economy starts south tractors & heavy equipment starts walking off...I always thought it'd be kind of obvious stealing a big high boy or grader, but seems to happen quite a bit! Shoot me a link to the system you sold if'n you don't mind... I would think a tag along system would need it's own hidden 12v source, because for sure anything in the trailer is gonna be riding with the battery disconnected, and I would think once it's left the scene the tow vehicle is gonna have it's main battery disconnected as well...? I still can't believe the cell phones couldn't have been used in this case, at least to get "close"...there's been a few members pm stating they'd worked in the cell phone industry and there's a few different ways to locate them...even without a call being made/answered...apparently, when the battery dies (or is removed?) the phone sends out a "death ping" one last time to alert the nearest tower, so that proximity is at least known. Still, it's asinine that we even have to discuss this...
I was reading up on this over the weekend..... Actually cell phones "can" be traced no matter what, it's just tied up in the courts allegedly due to "right to privacy" concerns. It seems that in high profile cases somehow they are able to link people to the scene of the crime when necessary by tracking their movement. Some of the GPS phones that have the "child tracker" feature might be the hot tip to have hidden somewhere in your truck, trailer or car.
Rob, in today's local paper two wreckers were stolen in Ft Liquordale this weekend and the owners found them with these $300 tracking devices within an hour of tracstart, the trucks were recovered, and both suspects were apprehended.. very cool system.. the last website my buddy had was > www.fleetsentinels.com
I drove through the reservation twice on Sunday -- could not see anything that looked suspicious. Perhaps a good idea would be to get 4 or 5 cars together, and sort of blitz the reserve, combing all of the roads within a few hours. Of course, that may already be happening. So sorry to hear of this, Pete, and I hope -- despite the situation -- things can work out in your favour.
I friggin' believe that! Every industry (insurance industry is a nightmare) is paranoid about this privacy stuff...but I always ask them, "with the majority of this prized information, what can a person REALLY do?"...99% of the time, the answer is "nothing". Anyway, back to important stuff...Pete called this morning, and without divulging too much info here in the open, I'll just say the fat lady hasn't started singing *just yet*...if you want any more than that, y'all know my number.
