    Hi..

I have a perfect condition trunk light assembly for my '72 Skylar,
    \
It even has the two cable clips and the wire protection cover.

But I can'r find a diagram of how to install it anywhere in the '72 books.!!!

Please tell me where I missed it...or lead me to picture of how to install my light.

    Thx,

    Stanley

i think there should be a plug for the end of the wire near the hinge on the drivers side up under the package tray

atleast thats where it is on my 70 vert.

    trunk light

nate ,u are correct . but stan, u may have to hunt for the wire that is supposed to be near the driver's side trunk hinge . the light itself
mounts just to the left of the trunk lid in the cutout space .

    I should be clearer

    I should be clearer.

1st, the harness plug to plug the light in is right in the open..and works OK.

2nd, the light is not the round utility light, which I think mounts in the middle of the trunk cover (for which there are pics in the service manual).

The light is the smaller socket with an angle bracket..which has a position switch built in to it. Open the trunk, light goes on. Close it, and the light goes off.

There is a lot of wire in the assembly for snaking through the trunk lid and clips and a protected section which I think goes around the hinge.

So, I am trying to find out what the correct layout of the wire is and where exactly the light mounts.

Could it be under a bolt for the lock..?

Just not obvious and I couldn't find any pic of it in the service manual or assembly manual.

This trunk light is shown in the wiring diagram..so I think it is a legit factory option.

    But maybe I missed it..?

    Thx for the help

    Stanley

    trunk light

    stan:
i mounted the trunk light , itself , inside the open space just a few inches to the left of the trunk lid lock . the power cable as i remember (?) snakes through the rib support & exits close to the trunk hinge .
i would have to look at it to recondition my memory on the exact location . the light on/off is , of course , is controlled by the trunk lid position .

I should take a pic of mine...I got it off a very factory original and very wrecked '70 Skylark Custom built in Flint. Man do I wish that car hadn't been crushed, but it was beer cans 10 years ago. Very nice car, except for the telephone pole shaped cleft that went all the way into the about the middle of the engine...the interior was gone when the car went to the wreckers, I assume there were no survivors in the wreck. Sad business, but the car was very original. I duplicated the factory routing. Mine is on my car where it was on the car it originally came on- a few, maybe six inches from the outside of the left edge of the trunk lid, in a recess cut into the lid near the top, looking at the lid while open. Different shifts, plants, or installers may have had their own ideas about where to put them, but I had a hole for the screw that holds on the angle bracket already waiting, and the wire was just the right length to go to the hole that mirrored the original's. The wire bundle with the protective braid went into a round hole by the trunk hinge, and is held to the edge of the trunk opening by little "S" clips.

a pic of the clips would help

    Hi Chris..

I got the opening, I got the pre-drilled starter hole for the light.

I think I got the routing now through the trunk ribbing..and the pop-out of the cable from the round hole just above the left hinge.

What I am missing is the routing and use of the clips around the hinge.

A closeup pic of that area would be very helpful.

    Can you do this..?

IF so, send me a PM and I will send you an e-mail address.

    Thx,

    Stanley

I couldn't get to the digital camera today...much too busy on the convertible (boy am I a bad welder) to stop by Dad's place. I should be over there tomorrow, however:TU:

OK. Here we go, finally:grin: This is how it was on a car that was, as far as I could tell, in original unrestored condition:

This is an alternate (and lousy) pic of where the cable goes in the lid. I have to use this to illustrate the clip mounting, instead.

The other "S" clip goes under the left hand edge of the trunk, maybe and inch or so in and 5 " down- there's a small vertical lip there that it clips onto. Give yourself a short length of slack cable there so the trunk hinge can function without interference. I had a better pic that this but I'm getting a 'file error' message on the camera:(

Now where do I get some of that wire "loom" to cover the wiring?

Is that the same stuff that is in older homes covering the knob and tube wiring?

    I put it in..

    Hi All..

    I installed my light yesterday.

I think I got it right, based on Chris' pics and descriptions

Of course, the guys at Buick made some changes. My '72 trunk lid did not have that exact hole for the cable as shown in Chris' picture.

I had a hole higher up above the hinge, not right next to it.

The length of braid covering the wire seemed to just be long enough to cover the exposed length of cable.

Interesting how they changed..not sure why, even..it was just the inner trunk??

    Thx again for the pics.

BTW..the correct bulb is a #89, which is avail everywhere.

How did you snake the wire from the hinge to the light?

I may not be done yet!

    Isn't it always the way...

I looked again at Chris' pics..and the hole he shows above the hinge looks more like an oval slot..which I do have.

Except the inner trunk ribs have only a small round hole behind the slot..so I am not sure yet how I can get the connector end of the wire through that hole..??

As for snaking the wire from the light to the hinge..this was not hard.

You start at the hole for the light, feeding the connector end of the cable toward the left side.

The ribbing is fairly open and the cable was a little stiff..so with some wiggling, it went around the corner of the ribbing and next thing it was dangling inf front of a large round hole in the trunk cover. A little more wiggling holding both ends now got all the cable around the corner.

As I said before, I now have to see if I am in coming out of a wrong hole. And if I can get the connector through that small slot as Chris shows.

I wonder how they did this at the factory..? I assume the cable assemblies were all pre-made. And that they wired them after they asembled and painted the trunks..

Did they stand there and wiggle wires..? Doesn't seem like that would be the preferred assembly technique...!!

    Let's keep updating..

    stumped..?

    Ok..maybe I'm slow :Do No:

I looked again..the slot right above the hinge is there..the matching hole in the inner trunk is a small round hole.

I actually think this is a drainage slot..

I can't see how to get the wire through this small hole. The connector won't fit..even the crimped blade alone wouldn't go through.

Chris..how did you get the wires through that hole when you installed the light..?

Anyone else with a few pics or a story would also be appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Stanley
