The GS-X-Tra had an article a couple years back about a '70-'72 speedometer face that went to 200. It turns out it was KPH instead of MPH, for export. Maybe to Europe, if not Canada o No:
I still think its %. Idle (500 rpm) is 10% of the redline (5000 rpm), 1000 rpm is 20%, etc, all the way up the scale....the redline is 100%... Sure wish someone body knew for sure. Can't be speedo/rpm, what if you left the car in first gear??? Cool though. later Tim
This might be really stupid but..... Could it be dual use somehow for 4 cylinders and V8's???? Doesn't seem likely, or practical, but I thought I'd throw it out there. :gt: My best guess is that someone played with Photoshop to pull one over on us. lol ou:  :eek2: :gt:
I took a real good look at that after importing the image to enlarge it. If that's a fake, I'm impressed. I would have to go with the earlier post and say it's a %-age thing on the tach. Probably for an overseas car that never made it overseas. I know they were available in England as I have a press release from 1970 announcing the car over there.
let me say this, Dave was given this yesterday (and i do mean given as in free) i have not seen it yet but i know my friend Kevin was with him when he got it and i know the guy they got it from. they say its legit and they are not the type of guys who would sit in front of a computer and doctor up a photo. i'll probably see it this weekend seeing that Daves car is stored less than 5 minutes from my home. i'll also ask him to bring it to the nats and show it around
I was only joking with the Photoshop comment. :gt: I'm sure it's not some kind of Canadian or oversees conversion (afterall....we do all use RPM's) I'm not quite sold on the 0-100% theory I'm see no use for a 4 Cyl tach with 8 Cyl markings on it Would dual points do anything different to a tach?? oNo:
I'm curious about the redline. My 71 doesn't have a tach, and the last time I had a GS with one it was 13 years ago. What is the redline on the typical GS tach? Is it "only" 5000 rpm?
If it turns out that this tach was a prototype (which it very well could be since it was in a "new style" 70 bodystyle), then the question I have is: What about the rest of the car? Perhaps it was a one-off too.o No: Todd
I think the more important question is Any IDEA if it still WORKS! o No: If it does, that would be soooo coooool!:bglasses: I'd put it in my dash if it worked, (that way I wouldn't have to struggle with cutting a hole in my hood)! :TU:
Well..I guess I'm not SURE, but how about pretty darn sure?? :gt: I'm thinking a revolution is a revolution, and a minute is a minute pretty much anywhere on the globe right? But I guess if anyone could figure out a way to make it more complicated, I'd leave it to the ones who use kilometers and newtons. lol :gt:  :beer
With current gas prices, it could be used to tell you how much it's costing you at any given speed.
Have seen one other tach like that. It was in my Vauxhall. The inner numbers are % of RPM with 100% being redline(5000 rpm). I remember wondering about it too when I bought and found a manual that described it. Steve Gray
