How are you guys keeping from "blowing up" those 200-4R's?

I didn't think they could handle the torque of a Big Buick.

My 200 4R came from Jim Burek. It's a racing version hardened up to handle the 455.

How much did that tranny set you back?

I have 3:42 gears, and the way I drive (foot ALWAYS in it) I probably get somewhere around 4mpg. Yes, I only drive the car to lay tire marks and make clouds of smoke.

I've posted this before, but anyway. My buddy Don (the guy who sold wolverine his motor) got 26 MPG on his trip from Pittsburgh to Bowling Green last year and he drives fast. He had a stock 72 455 from an Electra (idled at 450rpm) with a Q-jet and a Mallory Dist, th200-4r and 2.56 gears in an 86 Regal. He always averaged above 20 mpg. Some guy in Michigan owns it now.

comparisson to newer cars... Wife's 2003 ford Taurus... 14mpg :spank: :spank: To be fair though, it did need a new Cat converter, but it doens't look to have changed much :Dou:

My 2400# 32 highboy roadster with cloth top gets 10-11 mpg in mostly city running. It would probably do better if I kept my foot out of it.

Highway running - no city driving - nets 15-16 mpg.

The car has the aerodynamics of a brick, but the 3.70 diff is probably the main culprit far as the not so good mileage goes.

Rear tires are 30" tall and the car runs about 3000 rpm at 70 or so.

Engine is pretty mild, 462", Crower Compu-Pro #1 cam (260 & 266 degrees adv duration), 9/1 compression, headers with 1 7/8" primaries and 3 1/2" collectors, MSD box, Mallory vac advance Unilite, Edelbrock Performer intake with Edelbrock 750 cfm street carb with factory rods and jets.
(Mileage figures were with a leaned out one step Carter 750 cfm comp carb. I have yet to get a mileage figure with the new carb.)

Trans is a T-400 with 2400 rpm stall which locks up pretty solid at 2800 rpm.

    455 .040 over, Gessler fully ported Iron S1 Heads, 3.08 12-bolt, Loose 11" 2400rpm stall converter, 28.5" tires, 4100# = 15-16 mpg @ 70mph

@ Mike Trom - When I picked up My Convert. and drove it home from Buffao -> NY/LI (2.93 rear) I got exactly what you did - 18-19 mpg

Relatively speaking, I get average milage:

    Durango HEMI Magnum V-8, 4WD: 13 | 18
    Yukon Denali Vortec 6000 6.0L V-8: 12 | 16
    Hummer: 9.6

My 455 is therefore... average. :beer

    I don't know, it's just a stock rebuilt from an 82 Olds delta 88!
Maybe it's because I use a 2500stall 10 converter, and the shifts are not set for hard, there set for a little less then firm.

I have a friend that runs a trans shop, and he told me the parts are available to hold 455 torque, and so far he is right. My 72 convert weighs 3990 without the driver( 200 lbs) and with the 3.31 axle I have lost second gear twice. he was surprised at the muscle in the Buick, but came up with a wider second band, and a unit that supplies 40% more lock upon the band. I have not been able to break it since, but I don't run anything but 275/60 X 15 street tires.
