I was wondering how other board members felt about the policies of the classified section. I feel that the first to post publicly should be the one that is first in line to buy the item. This would totally eliminate any possibility of any behind the scenes backdooring. Why do some people make it a big secret about what they are buying, I personally dont care and dont know why anyone else would. Lets see how this poll goes and maybe we will see a change in the classifieds section. The only people that will be affected are those that are doing the backdooring, so the good guys have nothing to lose.

    Thanks

No matter whether you allow the call on a public, private and/or both type emails it really all falls back on the integrity of the seller and to some extent of prospective buyers. The buyer could for example say he changed his mine and still sell it even in face of a public email which we have had happen. So I for one see no point in this exercise. JW would have to change the policy anyway and you might as well just ask him without going throught this exercise. I know that sometimes for my own reasons I buy through private mail and see nothing wrong with it being done either way.

    I know what you mean..

But I don't have an answer. :Do No: The ONLY reason to be secret that I can think of, is for the guy who plans on claiming every part is original from the factory. :Dou:

I agree, it would be nice so everyone new if they were 1st in line, but what if the others either go somewhere else, or create multiple accounts here. :Do No:

herb, i'm sorry that you think that you were "back doored " on the consolette, I PMeD about a half hour after the add was placed. Why i pmed him instead of just replying to the ad?, i honestly don't know in my mind it seemed a quicker way to get in touch with him, since i am here at work and trying to due all duties that are involed with that, it just seemed faster so i could get back to work. There is no hidden ajenda or the seller backing out of the deal, i needed it for one of my cars. Sorry if you feel slided or anything else, sincerely kenny

I dont think I was backdoored on the consol but I just don't understand why people have a problem posting on the board. Jim or anyone else for that matter, can you give me a reason why you wouldn't want someone to know what you are buying? I can understand if you are buying something as a gift for another board member and want to surprise them, but I cannot think of any other reason.

    Just curious

I've done it both ways and I really don't have an answer as to why. On something I really wanted a while back I sent a PM first as I wanted the seller to see that when he logged on and then went in and posted on the thread so that others would know where they were in line, if I remember right I was the second post on the thread. I like to see a post in the thread so that everyone knows but sometimes you just hit PM first :Dou:

I think Jim is right, it always falls back on the integrity of the seller :TU:

    Dan...
Consider this...some of us like to keep secrets...
What I'm building in my garage is for me to know and others to find out...
    YES it's a stock (350)

It's an old habit that's hard to break.

Seriously, the last thing I need is somebody ELSE giving me more rules to deal with or telling what I can and can't do. GEZZ! :puzzled:

    privacy

Sometimes when I buy a part, I prefer to keep it private, I really don't always want everyone knowing what I bought or what I paid. Private allows for that privacy.

I voted that PM's be allowed, and I'm sure every moderator here would do the same. We have rules in place that work pretty well for the classifieds. We already have to babysit those forums enough as it is, I don't really want to have to change it's diapers and put a bottle in its mouth too... JMHO

BTW, I'm not bothered at all that this poll is posted, so please don't misunderstand my comments in that regard. Just expressing the view that is generally held by those of us that would have to TRY to enforce any changes such as those proposed here.

No offence taken I dont think that the rules necessarily need to change but maybe more sellers could adopt the first public post is first in line to buy. I just posted this to hear the flip side of the coin, and was hoping to hear some reasons on why people want these transactions to be kept a secret. I was just curious on how others felt, I didnt create this post or poll to cause trouble or make waves. I didnt realize that changing the policy would create more work for others; you guys have enough to do.
I appreciate all the opinions given.

    Thanks

Polls can be fun and sometimes a good way to open debate.

You know what they say about opinions...everybodys got one.

We've used polls in the past to gauge membership opinions regarding changes a couple of times, and they are a good tool to gain input from those who use the classifieds. Nothing wrong with asking for opinions on stuff like this.

The few times I've place a for sale ad, I've tried to remember to specifiy exactly how I want to be contacted, usually asking for replies on the thread only. I personally think it's the easiest way for a seller to keep the replies all straight in his head. I just don't feel we should limit members to only one form of contact.

I think it gets down to the seller, they can still sell to who ever they want, you don't KNOW you are the first in line, the seller may have another buyer talking about it, not on the board. If it is listed on the board, does that mean you can't sell to anyone not on the board? There is always something else to spend your money on, move on.

    Yes Herb

    Now, there are the cars I publicly admit to owning and restoring;

Then, there is the list I have told my lovely spouse that I own; and

Then, there is the list that I own.
