Show / Stick appearing super nice cars are my point, Race cars mount the biggest baddest moon faced tach anywhere you want!

I mounted my tachometer to the steering column. My car is also not worth $40K, but to me it is priceless. I considered in dash by removing the clock, but Ray spent days on that clock getting it working and it keeps good time, so, no. It slightly obstructs the speedometer, but I use a GPS since I need KPH anyways.

This is the way I would do it if it was not for racing..

I'm renewing this thread since I'm again thinking of installing a tach on my steering column. My in-dash tach has gotten very inaccurate and my build sheet also shows that my car came with the Rallye clock anyway.

So, I got to looking at ways to mount it on the column without having to use the portion that rotates with gear changes. Turns out there is about a 1/2 inch wide surface just behind the steering wheel that is clear all around the column and doesn't interfere with either the ignition switch or the directional signal lever. I have a large hose camp that will fit around the column and hold the mounting bracket of some tach enclosures. The clamp is also about 1/2 in. thick. It might have to be trimmed slightly but I think I can make it work with certain tach housing brackets. Has anyone tried this before?

In addition to wanting a tach that's accurate, I'd like one that is closer and also in my straight line of sight so all I have to do to read it is just lower my eyes for a second.

That is the spot where I have the tach mounted with a large hose clamp on my column. It hasn't moved since I tightened it down. As I said, it obscures the first 10 MPH markers, but i uses a GPS for KPH anyways.

Which tach and mounting bracket are you using? Got pics?

Hey Ray that's how mine is done, same as Chuck's. I have a smaller diameter autometer tach and it fits there nicely. I'll take some pics here shortly for you.

    Cheers, Bob

I downloaded an intelligent audible hearing aid tach app that screams “SHIFT MF (My Friend) SHIFT!!!” very annoying when I am bush hogging though

Or when you and the misses are having "personal time" and you're ontop yelling back at it saying " I'm in fourth gear already dammit I ain't got no more" then she looks at you like WTF??:D:p

The tachs are certainly easier to see on the steering column, seems natural to me.

I didn’t want to mention it at first hoping someone else had one to announce but since that isn’t the case I’ll fess up.
NOT for the light hearted OR (more importantly!) light walleted, but I went with a multipurpose high tech rear view mirror with factory map light, and updated with compass & tachometer all attached to our factory mirror. *Note* there was also a temperature option but those were on back order so stayed with the 3 option unit.
Obviously perfect eye level for consistent manual shifting.
I highly recommend it (at a co$t of course!).

Ray - my car being a 69 with tilt, is probably pretty close to the same as your 70. I used the AutoMeter Sport Comp 3.5" tach and it just fits with a little bit cut off of the factory lower bracket that it came with. I mounted it within that narrow location that you were looking at. Here is a couple photos:

The only draw back it that the column won't tilt all the way up. I'm OK with that, though.

I also have an autometer tack that I purchased through Canadian tire. Sorry I cannot take apicture but my car is 450 miles away getting the engine rebuilt. I do not have tilt steering.

Thanks for that suggestion but my reasons for wanting to go with a column mounted tach are two fold. 1) I’d like to reinstall the clock that the car was built with and 2) the steering column is a more appropriate location for convenient viewing during high performance driving. The way I sit in my GS I have to move my head some to see the upper rpm range of the dash tach.

I understand Ray, and of course it is your car. JMO, but a clock in our cars is a useless thing to have compared to the tachometer. Mounting the tachometer on the column detracts from the overall appearance of the dash, and regardless of how you mount it, it will block part of the dash. If you mount it the way Rich has his, it will block your view of the gauge pod. I could understand if you wanted a hood tachometer, and you wanted to fill that pod with a clock. Just my thoughts.
