Me too. I’ll have one installed within the next two weeks. Either the Auto Meter Z series 7000 or 8000 rpm model

Hey Ray, I’ve got one on my column at the moment. Mainly just because I had it sitting on the shelf and I am still trying work out the mechanicals on my car and want to keep close eye on everything. Long term I’ll probably do something different but in the mean time it works. I’ve also considered a hood tach but don’t think I can bring myself to cut a hole in the hood. Maybe a smaller aftermarket tach on the column or my in dash repro tach, or could get the original tach I have updated. My car came with a clock so I wanted to put it back that way also but not terribly committed to that. Really just want something I can trust that is easily visible. I also have an extra pillar cover drilled for a tach mount that I had in my 69 when I was racing it. Only thing I’ll say is you got to be real mindful of the gas gauge if you obstruct it but Maybe that won’t be an issue with a smaller unit. Best of luck to you . upload_2022-10-14_18-37-11.jpeg

That tach is a monster for sure. Understand why you might want a smaller one.

Since I only want to do my column tach once, I’m spending a lot of time picking the right one. I’ve got it narrowed down to an Auto Meter 3 1/8 7000 rpm or a 3 3/8 8000 rpm in a black cup.

Ray, check out Speedhut gauges. You might find some more options.

Just reread your response and realize that I didn't answer it. To be clear, I'm not offended by any of the comments positive or negative about wanting to put a tach on my steering column. Can't see where any of my posts indicated I was offended.

My purpose in placing the tach on the steering column, in addition to just liking it there, is a functional one too. The in-dash tach location is impractical for being able to watch it closely when at the track or running through the gears. My sitting position in the driver's seat has my non-tilt wheel partially blocking the upper range of the tach, first of all. And, my right hand position on the wheel further blocks the view. Further, the dash tach only reads to 6000 RPM. My stroker motor HP peak is at about 5600 so, I'd rather the tach have a full scale at either 7000 or 8000. And, finally, with the large tach almost directly in my field of view, I can watch the road and see the tach needle without actually moving my head or taking my eyes off the road. So, there is my reasoning.

Those Speedhut gauges look really nice and their design website is excellent. I now have a new favorite. But, I couldn't find a steering column cup or strap. Do they have one?

    Thanks much for the suggestion.

Hey Ray it's been a few days since I told ya I'd get some pics of my tach on the column but here they are. Sorry if they're dark and dingy the car is in the garage and the lights suck out there. 20221015_194039.jpg 20221015_194054.jpg

After much research of the most popular tachs out there, I've finally decided on the Speedhut custom tach line. (Thanks Canadian GS350). Their tachs are custom designed by the customer and their website is great for trying different designs and seeing what they will look like when finished. The tach I chose is their 3-3/8 0-6000 RPM model with internal shift light and their 3-3/8 mounting bracket for installing on the steering column.

I've designed three custom dials and like them all for different reasons so, I've started a poll in another thread to see what other other Buick guys like (or don't like). I know it's my tach so do it the way I like but, just want to see what others may think. Here's a link to the poll thread.

"If" there was an option to mount on the dash without adding mount holes in the pad or hard dash sheet metal would that work? It seems to me the best place for a tach is inline with the windshield.

Well, I finally finished my research and ordered the Speedhut tach after Thanksgiving. It came in last week and I just installed it yesterday although I haven't run the wiring yet. It's the 3 3/8 size, 0-6000 RPM with adjustable shift lights and peak RPM memory.

I've got it located on the column immediately behind the steering wheel hub which places the clamp just barely ahead of the directional signal rod and the ignition switch. I've modified the base of the collar to fit tightly on the column and also cut off part of the front of it so it's just a little wider than the clamp (Clamp is painted black to blend with the column)

While driving I can see almost all of the fuel gauge and all but the 0 - 20 MPH portion of the speedometer. As I previously mentioned, I use the analog gauges below the dash to monitor voltage, oil & water.

I'm very happy with the installation and will report back after I've had a chance to set up the shift lights and the peak RPM memory. As you can see, the factory tach is still there and I'll replace it with the factory clock as soon as I can locate a nice one. Anyone wanna trade a tach for a clock? :D

How about this from Summit? It doesn't have any features other than a tach though. $342 Buick tach.jpg

I’ve had that hood tach on two of my GSs and really like it but it’s not right for this one. I’m trying to keep this one as close to 100% original as possible and can’t let myself punch a hole in the hood.

Well, the installation is finally complete and I really like it. I've got the shift lights programmed and the intensity is programmable for both daylight and night time. It also has a peak RPM memory. The below pic is from my viewing position and most of the speedometer is viewable and the fuel gauge as well. I really like the night illumination.

My rallye clock is currently at Instrument Services being restored & converted to quartz and should be here in a month or two. Once installed I'll put my in-dash tach for sale on the forum.
