The 2-piece shafts are really cool to watch when they let go. A friend was doing a great burnout when all of a sudden his back tires stopped rotating and all kinds of smoke started billowing out from under the car. The front piece of the driveshaft kept rotating and just cooked that rubber seal.

Interesting. I’ve never shortened nor had one of this type shortened. So it’s not splined and just “glued” together?

Basically the same way thry make motor mounts. And they can't be shortened

    Yeah,
If we had a car with one of them we tossed it and had a solid shaft unit cut to length and installed.

I think the 70 GS 455 auto car we cut up to use for part of the X-Camino had a 2-piece shaft.

I am seeing more and more of them failing. I think the sleeves are finally breaking down.

I have the 2-piece in my 69 GS400 with the stock TH400 and 8.2 (non-posi). It's on my list of things to replace...

I'm curious as to why that style can't be shortened? When I had that done the shop just cut off one end of the u-joint mount and welded that end back on...and balanced of course.

    Guy.
That was on a solid drive shaft and is done all the time.

The shops around my area won’t do anything with the 2-piece drive shafts. Not only won’t they warranty them, they simply will not touch them.

They are simply not interested in giving a warranty for a driveshaft with a 50+ year old piece of rubber in the middle.

Here is another thing, sometimes they don’t fail completely but will turn just a bit. If that happens they get out of balance and can create a huge vibration at certain rpm’s.

It was a good idea to make for a better ride, but you can’t expect a part like that to last forever.

PS, Call around and see if a shop in your area will cut one down.

If they know their craft they should be able to rebuild a two piece driveshaft. There is a fellow out in the northwest here that did them but he has since passed on.
You're correct that most places now either don't want to be bothered or they just don't know how to do them.
If they were done once they can be done twice.

I am not saying you are not correct, just that we cannot get them done in our area, and yes there are some very good knowledgeable shops in my area but they are not willing to take the chance on them.

My 70 4-speed small block car had a 2 piece driveshaft
