Forgot to mention, this is a very nice used hood ornament. There has been no touch ups of the colors. You would be hard pressed to find a better original one.

Oh no, I was gonna bid on that ebay emblem but I just repainted the one on my car and couldn't justify spending $300+. Now I'm having second thoughts. Someone tell me I did the right thing by not bidding on it. Maybe another will come along before I die.......

You should have bid on it. Good luck finding another at that price. What did you use to repaint yours? I have a nice one that needs paint. tom

I know I know, but mine didn't come out so bad. Walmart had these small plastic tubs of paint in their craft section. I got some detail brushes and put on 2 coats and then sprayed some clear over it. Looks great from 5 feet. The paint is a little off but unless an original one is right next to it, you wouldn't know. It sure looks better with paint on it, makes all the difference.

Paints for Tri-Shield (Re: WTD: 1965 Sportwagoon hood ornament)

Dear Tom and V-8 Buick "do-it-yourself" hood ornament restorers,

Sorry, I didn't read this question when I blasted through the postings at the time. You can get what appear to me to be excellent results using Testors military model paints. The colors are:

    • Insignia Red FS 31136
    • Insignia White FS 17675
    • Blue Angel Blue FS 15056

You can then top coat these model paints with Testors GlossCote lacquer to give them some production. You should be able to top-coat that with other products. I had a layer of the ceramic coating opti-coat applied. The only thing I don't know is how well these paints will stand up to UV light. On the other hand, these colors are standardized by the U.S. Government:

    http://www.fed-std-595.com/FS-595-Paint-Spec.html

The FS numbers in the model paints refer to the federal government standard for those colors. So if you want, you can have in principle any paint created to match these colors. That how the government keeps anything painted for the government kept to a uniform color.

    Cheers, Edouard :beer
