Just installed some SPC springs, new SPC stage 1+ upper control arms, and some cheapo shocks. Wow what a difference! It drives so much better. The stance is also freakin awesome, but I am a bit surprised at how low it is in the front now! Dang wheels rub a little and I have been knocking the rust off my headers using asphalt and concrete lol! Right now, I am running old school American Racing Steel wheels that I painted black with Cooper Cobras in the front and BFG Radial T/As in the back. Wheels are 15x8 and tires are 245/60/15 front and 275/60/15 rear. I must say, there is something about a muscle car with lots of sidewall filling the wheel wells, but they suspension mods have highlighted the fact that these balloon tires might look great but they turn like hell. Not to mention, these Cobras and T/As are like ice skates. That being said, I am in the market for some 17 or 18 inch wheels and new tires, most like the standard Nitto 555s. I have been researching like crazy the last few days, and I cannot decide on wheel or tire sizes!
my car scrapes too, I am going to look into some stiffer springs, I may sacrifice the ride a bit but the hate to be bottoming out on the dips.
SPC drop springs will give you a lot of drop! There are spacers you can install at the upper side of the spring that will give you a little boost. They are cast aluminum and available in 1/4", 1/2", and 1" I believe. Call Savitske Classic & Custom for them. Remember that you will get almost a 2:1 ratio of ride height change. i.e. a 1/2" spacer will give you almost 1" of change. SPC lower control arms have special cups that allow for spacer disks to be stacked giving 2" or so of adjustment. You could try those for some additional adjustment range. I have had my front end apart probably 10 times trying to get the ride height/rake correct as I have changed tires, oil pans, etc.!
I actually think I like it now. It has a little forward rake, but I am hesitant to do anything until the springs settle a bit. Also, eventually I want 17s and new tires. Might as well wait to see! I almost forgot, I put spc progressive rate jounce bumpers in too. It drives so nice with all the new parts!
New wheels and tires are on! Can I officially be part of the pro-touring club now? 18x8 4.75bs front and 18x9 5.5bs rear Coy's C-67s wrapped in 255/40/18 and 275/40/18.
Finally had a chance to get the car pulled out and cleaned up over the weekend. Managed to snap a quick pic from my phone.
Here are couple from Saturday. First visit to a gas station since 1992 and a visit to my buddy who did my seats.
blyons 79 Ben Love the Skylark !! great pics! and my favorite quote from you glad to see your spending money where it counts , in the suspension !
Thanks! I'll get it painted one of these days. I figured what was underneath and inside the car was more important than paint. Would rather drive a nice unpainted car than a shiny piece of crap.....as the Porsche moto goes..."Form follows function."
