Looks like no one makes a grill emblem for the 72 GSX. I figure because of the mounting pin locations. I'm I missing something here, or is it needed to redrill the back mounting plate?
Al, 71 & 72 emblems are the same. The 71's bolted directly to the grill. The 72's had a backing pate that slid behind the grill to mount them. I do not have a pic but believe it is shown in the assembly manual. Duane
Just the '71-2 GSX grille emblem is the same, correct? I thought the '72 GS grille emblem was smaller whereas the '71 was more like the '70 but with different pin locations. Tbh, I've only had one '72 GS and that was a long time ago so I'm not nearly as familiar w/the differences (i.e. I wouldn't be a good '72 concours judge). Getting another '72 GS is on bucket list however.
Yes, I am talking about the GSX front grill emblems only. The GSX grill emblems have really long studs on them. I remember years ago some of the reproductions had shorter studs and it was almost impossible to mount them. I hope they fixed that. Duane
I saw this pictures on Ebay. Went for big money. I was told 71 and 72 were the same, yet you look for it and 72 is not listed, not even by Todd.
IF they are the same I have them in stock as well as the Backing Plates used in 1972 . . . . . however when I placed the backing plate up against a 71 GSX emblem the holes did not match up. Does anyone know for sure if the 72 GSX used the Backing Plate or was it just the GS that used it???? .
If this one pictured is actually a 1972 Part then the Studs appear to match the 1971 GSX emblems that I have in stock. Studs are located in the same spot. TPP does list them as 1971 though. Typically if there parts are correct for other years they list all those years on the Label. (Typically) being the key word. The 1971 GSX Part Number is 1237097. If anyone knows the 72 GSX Emblem number that would probably put this to rest. I believe the 2) emblems are different . . . . Hopefully someone will make the 72 version at some point. .
Ok, I have attached pictures of the grille emblems. The plate that works for the GS grille emblem does Not work for the GSX emblem. I cannot tell you if the 71/72 GSX emblem is different or not. I purchased the 71/72 emblem almost six years ago because it was supposed to be a 70, well it was not. I finally found some 70 GSX emblems. .
Does anyone on the board have a 72 GSX and could post a picture of the backside of the emblem ? 71 GS and GSX did not use a backing plate . 71 GSX had a lower production the 70 GSX and if they had emblems left from 71 , they may have used the 71 emblem on the 72 GSX model with a different mounting plate . my 2 cents Bill
Bill, That is exactly what I said in one of my earlier posts. All you need to do to verify this is look in a 72 assembly manual. They have the part number listed on the grill/emblem drawing. It is in the Sheetmetal section. Duane
Looked in my parts book, and the do not list a grille emblem for the 72 GSX. They are only listed for the 70 and 71.
