Damn!! Time capsule is right! That's pretty amazing. This looks like a great reference piece for someone doing a restoration. Like, a 3D assembly manual.
Yes Brett it is, the hard part is keeping my hands off things that I want to “restore”. I like fresh, refinished new looking, but with this car I gotta teach myself to just clean things and preserve it. It’s gonna be a struggle.
I knew it would. I got beat up a little stating that the 'Stage 1" fuel pump should really not be called that. I believe it was part of the HD cooling package at least in '73.
Preservation is the middle ground between nice and shiny and a full blown frame-off. What Cook's done to the GSX is a perfect example of preservation with some restraint trickled in and to some degree, my car is as well. If you're a purist, this seems like the perfect candidate for preserving its history.
The first day back with the car and I’m starting off with the Clay Bar treatment and then a machine polishing to see how this 50 yrs old paint will respond.
So yesterday I decided that the vinyl top would need to be refinished so it wouldn’t deteriorate any more, it was pretty speckled due to loss of pigmentation from the years. You can see it in the first picture. I would have loved to have left it alone for originality but some things have to be preserved, and it didn’t need replacement just a re-dye with SEM, which by the way I’m always impressed with their quality products.
Just cleaned it with soap and water then wiped it down with wax and grease remover and adhesion promoter, both basic 3M products. Also I used Sailcloth white so it wouldn’t look overly white, gives it a slightly aged look instead of too bright white.
I didn't realize that one can die a vinyl top, and I think you hit the nail on the head with the color. BTW, what did you use the Windex for?
I ordered new floor mats from Legendary and put them in the 1970 show car and used the older ones for this car, the patina matches rather nicely.
The Original Window sticker came with the car along with other paperwork. I was wondering, just wanted to confirm that the list includes “Wide Oval” tires 14-70. That would mean Firestones right? I always though these came with Goodyears as an option? Anyway I hope so because I got lucky and bought a set of Firestones that were on a Show car with 900 miles on them for a very reasonable price I’ll pickup next week. 4 times cheaper than new prices! Notice how the Options added a over $2000 to a base model. Stereo $233, crazy money back then!
Very nice. I should do mine (green). I guess that paint color was an extra $18 So in Buick speak, A/C & HD cooling would've gotten it 2 radiator upgrades. So would A/C & Stage 1 - You most likely couldn't get A/C, Stage 1, & HD Cooling since S1 included I6. So interesting how these cars were ordered. All those options but not S1. Congrats! That's a beauty.
15" wheels typically came with the Polyglas tires. There were 4 or 5 different manufacturers that supplied tires to Buick, according to my assembly manual. Let me go do a search on here for wheel options. I know there was one that had a lot of info last year.
