Other then the adapter plate. Is anything else required to mate these two together ? I'm sure this has been done. Anyone here do this. Any Info will help. pros & cons

Good links to what has been done to my Riviera included in my profile - much of the same work will be needed for a A-Body as the pricing above was for my Dad's Stage 1 car. http://www.v8buick.com/showthread.php?261876-1970-Buick-Riviera-Black http://www.v8buick.com/showthread.php?157013-nother-1970-Riviera-owner&highlight='nother+70
I take it the price of the transmission included the converter? Also what kind of controller was it, Will it shift automatically or does it have to be manually shifted? Bob H
Go Info guys, I have the 4l80e trans already. and the torque converter that came with it. I had it rebuilt when it was in one of my GMC 1 ton company vans. The short of it is I pulled the new 350 four bolt main that had 500 miles on it and put it in my Blazer. saved the trans and junked the van. Didn't know 5 years ago I would be putting it in a buick. The trans has 3500 miles on it but has been on the garage floor for a long time. I don't really understand the electronics of it. I am glad it can be done vs gear vendor overdrive. I also have 3.42 posi rear. I have a 67 A body boxed frame. will the trans cross member need to be relocated or replaced ? I really like the paddle shift idea. well beyond my capabilities but that's a sweet set up. I would need a professional for that application. Anything eles I should know?
Bob, The transmission for my Riviera was a rebuilt 4L80e with stock torque converter for me it was $1000 (I paid another $300 for his knowledge and explanation) total ~$1300 for me off craigslist. - bought from the lead GM Turbo Hydromatic engineer in Mesa AZ (I forgot his title, but he is the one that installed the 4L80e in Jay Leno's Toronado). I still have his business card somewhere. There are many choices for shifting the 4L80e. I build my own TCM. There are vendors that make TCM and they can be programmed install to shift auto-magically. Personally, I enjoy the pseudo automatic TCM I made. It is too much fun and simple not unlike a paddle shifter. It's still a preference to the car owner.
"I have a 67 A body boxed frame. will the trans cross member need to be relocated or replaced ?" - I'm not too sure, probably your call based on how you want it fitted - the cross member will need to moved back. "I really like the paddle shift idea. well beyond my capabilities but that's a sweet set up." - I built v8Buick user "sean Buick 76" Sean a TCM for his twin turbo project. "Anything eles I should know?" - nothing else I can help you with, because Im not too familiar with a '67. I can't imaging the difficulty would be any different from any other A-body. In full disclosure my Dad's car is not completed - we (the family) had to hold on tackling the project. I know someone else has put a 4L80e in an A-Body other than Sean. :TU:
what do you guy think of this controller. It's pricey but popular with this type of conversion. http://www.jegs.com/p/TCI/TCI-EZ-TCU-Electronic-Transmission-Controller/1433010/10002/-1 http://www.tciauto.com/tc/4l60e-4l80e-remote-tps-w-mounthtml/
More DIY, but folks are using a $340 Microsquirt and wiring to control the 4L80e's. You'd probably need a GM MAP sensor, some harness plugs and possibly a TPS sensor, which can be sourced from a junkyard, or you can buy new, but otherwise just a bit of wiring and and you have a sub $400 fully programmable controller. Of course if you are buying new plugs, sensors, etc, it'd be more. http://www.diyautotune.com/catalog/microsquirt-engine-management-system-ecu-only-p-519.html http://www.msextra.com/product-range/expansion/microsquirt-transmission-control/ http://www.msextra.com/forums/viewforum.php?f=138
There are several very reputable builders of TCMs. It is still a matter of preference in functionality and complexity. Hard to say one is good or bad over another. I opted to build mine because I can and want simplicity. At the moment there is no fussing with sensors in my unit. You may want to do trials on more than one unit. But every unit will work. If you want identical shifting like the th400, the tci is probably the best. I have the software from these units, pretty cool stuff. What ever the choice its still nice to have OD.:beers2:
Very good links here. some custom equipment I didn't know was available. this takes a lot of the guess work out. thank you. I'm going for it. I have the trans and converter (can i use the chevy converter?) I would be in $600 to rebuild the th400 $100 for the shift kit plus another $500 for a stall speed converter.Plus plus plus, AND wouldn't have that OD. thanks V8 Buick friends. Could I use the factory speedometer ?
1.) Torque converter works fine, you're only going to be able to use three bolts obviously. Remember though you need metric bolts (the converter is metric thread). Add washers to match the spacing of the adapter plate. 2.) Speedo will need replaced unless you want to buy the $500 billet tail-housing to run a cable driven speedo. 5 hunn-ed dollas uzzled: :TU:
5 hundo to much big. 137 for a speedo at summit ya say ? that sounds better. the billet tail will have to wait a few years. to many other parts to buy. good tip on the washers and metric bolts. I've been thinking about that too.
You could do the free speedometer too if you have a tablet or smartphone. Load up your favorite speedometer app and there will be a heads up display option. You can place the phone or tablet on the dash and have a GPS readout of your speed reflected in the windshield. Or you could buy a mount and just read it like a normal gauge. I used to do that in my 86 regal since the speedometer cable was broken
I was just reading something like that. use gps to calibrate the aftermarket speedo. I have that app already on my phone. I like to use it on take off of airplanes. get the upgrade and you will see speeds of 400+ mph cruising speed. about 185 at wheels up. good tip. thanks
Great thread, I will save for future reference. I will ask a question, did you consider using a 6l80? If your going away from stock, why not go for the 6 speeds?
No I didn't. I have the 4l80e. I also have a Muncie M20, th400. and SP300. so buying another transmission was never a thought.
