Do you have any close up shots? That looks really good from the distance. Did you rattle can it or just use a cheap paint sprayer?
rattle can, its hard to get a nice even coat unless your in a garage out of the wind. up close its not perfect, but for a temporary spray job it looks much better then primer (shaved the stake pockets/tailgate holes). It's helped up fairly well over the last year through 95 degree weather, all the way down to -10 and snow/sand/salt. my truck needs a little work now though, it met the guardrail on the highway. waiting for parts to some in so I can get it back together.
Ouch, looks like a $50 paint-job crinkles a lot (sorry). It looks like the paint did come out good. Too bad about the guard rail, hopefully no one was hurt. Are you going to fix it yourself and paint it the way you did before?
I do plan on fixing it myself, had to order Radiator support Passenger fender Hood headlights turn signal lights grille shell new billet grille headlight housing support (plastic piece headlights go on) new bowtie for grille basically whole front clip beside driver fender and bumper. I plan on getting a Silverado SS bumper cover instead of a new chrome bumper. My buddy own's a spray gun so I may sand and prep everything and head down and have it sprayed in the booth this time.
That paint looks really sweet, too bad about the guard rail, one jumped out at me and creased the driver's door of my Impala. Looks like crap.
Sorry about the bender, what color of paint is that it looks sweet!!!!!!!!! How many can's to complete the job???? Thanks J
I will be soon on my 84 Cutlass... I have most of the old paint sanded down.. had to go bare metal on the roof and around the quarter windows to fix body work (TONS of bondo... now just a little) As soon as I get the bumper covers sanded, and alittle more filling and sanding, I should be ready for pain in 2 weeks (I can only work on it Sundays, and not tomorrow because of Easter). Got all the supplies though.:TU:
Just put my first 2 coats on yesterday... and all I can say is MY GOD I SUCK AT BODY WORK!!!!! lol lets just say, you can see a "few" sanding marks from where I didn't go fine enoughou: Oh well... it's just a POS car anyway, as long as it shines it'll be better than what it was... besides.. ugly POS's make better sleepers :Brow:
Does anyone else wanna fess up and admit to trying this?? and show pictures of your successes and/or mistakes ? :kodak:
Currently in the process... only been able to do one coat soo far, don't have time to work on it or it needs other stuff done with what little time I do get. With one coat it's thin, but a decent 20 footer. Will look worse after I wet sand it, but that's what the other coats are for. Only thing I can say... .MAKE SURE your body work is good... paint makes any mistakes jump out...lol. Luckily, mine is just a POS car... so as long as it's OK, I don't care p I like sleepers:Brow:
Madcat's got it right. It's all in the prep. There was a saying in Hot Rod I read in their body work issue "When you think you're done sanding, sand for 2 more days." I had to learn the hard way with my first paint job attempt. I do body & paint on the side, but I'm intrigued by this thread because paint materilas are soooo expensive. I would like to try this roll on method. I need to buy another car to try it. p
I painted my 76 Century with spray cans and it looks pretty decent. 3 years later and just the odd touch up but it is dent free and rust free so that helped.
I was supposed to try this on my car this summer but couldn't find the time! So it'll happen next year for sure.
Hahaha, I'm happy to have seen this post. Good to know someone else did it too. I did this last year just for the hell of it. because I was bored. Funny to know that I'm not the only guy in the world who decided to give Rustoleum a shot. This guy took great pictures. I painted the whole car outside in my driveway, thinned it 2-1 with Acetone. I used a lacquer touch up gun for cabinet doors and a 2 gallon brad nailer compressor. It took 2 weeks for the paint to cure, and about a month to be able to sand it, I never ended up sanding mine cuz I got sick of waiting for it to dry, but it still looks great. I'll try and find a picture. http://classicoldsmobile.com/forums...90420770-pics-both-my-babies-together-85-.jpg
HA... I tried the roller deal, but it just didn't work for me. Looked good, but I don't have what it takes to make it nice. Looks ALOT better in the pics than in person, although a decent 10 footerp Pic:
