Maybe aluminum , But, I think he reason they're on the roof is theft deterrent. All the others in this neighbor hood have the units on the ground inside steel cages. Putting them on the roof to deter theft; Maybe that's a good idea,. But doesn't the compressor need to be level for proper lubrication?
Yes they need to be level.......older ones still used copper.......big units for small apartments....must be down south somewhere..... Peace WiildBill
They will work fine. The refrigerant exits them from the very bottom so no danger of oil trapping. Looks like crap though
As a long time tech I've seen lots of goofy stuff and been very surprised the equipment was still running. Yes ya want the condenser to be somewhat level but have seen them happily humming along sitting at a 45* angle when ants decided to move all the sand under it to the inside or on the roof of a beachfront condo where there was nothing left but a fan balancing on top of a set of coils and all the metal support structure rotted away from salt air. Been hired to go up on the roofs of abandoned strip stores to survey the A/C systems and found nothing left but the steel framework and compressors so being up in the air is really not a deterrent
In South Florida, yeah, if you live in the wrong neighborhood you have to put a cage around your compressor. The rest of us just use a very heavy slab of cement to anchor the compressor down so it doesn’t go away in a hurricane.
My high school buddy was the head electrician for the Palm Beach county school board. They had just finished rewiring and putting up new flood lights to the football field at a local high school. School starts and so does the football season. The lights didn’t work. He went out and checked and somebody stole all the copper wiring for the lights! He thinks it was an inside job. Who else would know that it had all new wiring.
A friend worked in maintenance for Monroe, Ga and a few years ago they found a crispy, dead meth head on the roof of a school they had closed down. Apparently said meth head figured the power was off since the school wadn’t being used. He tried to cut through a cable and found out, shockingly, he was wrong. Patrick
Oh heck no Mark! Methhead not Moth head! You see them at Dollar General’s running the cash register. Beautiful little girl until she smiles and has no teeth. Oh sh*t!
Currently working as an electrician, ive heard many stories of people breaking into old abandoned mills here in western pa/ eastern oh and stealing a lot of the copper out of them. Its crazy that they assume all the power is turned off to these buildings
What's crazy is that if you miss a few electric bills, your power will be shut off, but an abandoned factory they leave the power on!
