Air shifter question

    So I'm looking into getting a air shifter for my car. Thinking the tomahawk install will keep me busy off the line. I'm shifting into 2nd about 55 feet out or so now. Have a th400,Hurst quarter stick and use a co2 air throttle control now. 3 speed trans so do you just use it for the 1-2 shift?Shifter has a line lock button on the handle now and transbrake button that I think I'll move too. I'm looking at a shiftnoid sa-4055 model now with a rpm switch to activate it. Should I run a separate bottle and line or can you t off the bottle in car now? What are guys using?

    Dan I shift the dragster by hand while the tires are still in the air.....:D1.01-60'
    We use an electric shifter in Jenn's 1971 dragster as the cage is small. That works well and can be set off by rpm inputs.
    Many of our friends use air shifters with general success. Just make sure to check your bottle often so you don't have a no pressure malfunction. Bad way to lose a race. A second bottle is a good back up in the event of low air going to the line.

    Dan, when I raced a chassis car I had a air shifter for 1st to 2nd, happens quick. Plenty of time to tag 3rd. I use an electric throttle control so I don't know if both systems can go off same bottle.

    Both can go off 1 bottle just tee b4 the regulaator.....and run a regular and solenoid for each separately........any tube b4 the reg is the same as the bottle basically..

    Ppl go all season on glides on a small bottle so a big should last all season......I'm about to do this to my car too. If going to the hassle I'd let it shift both and just drive and pay attention to the other car

    I've called and talked to them several times about my plans.....they were willing to take time and answer questions.

    Your shifter gets a modification to allow the 2/3shift without the lever squeeze and then add the arm that actually moved the shifter........only little thing is to shift back you will need to hold the added arm up so the added pin the arm grabs can pass under to get into park......or even go back into low after burn out.

    I'm sure this can done with just the pinky but might take a little to get it 1 handed and not pinch one's hand

    Couple quick pics I found online......yes you can shift up and down by hand.....but you will need to lift the new external shifting arm to go forward. You can see the blank track slot......that all your park rev neutral etc. Its the lower gears that the hooks grab........the solenoid only has so much stroke....so it grab a pin you add to the shifter stick the shifts when the solenoid resets it walks up the exterior of the hook and drops down by its weight to the next hook.......

    So without lifting that arm when you go to shift the other way it will get caught on the hook and not move.

    Is yours forward pattern or reverse......the concept is the same just the hooks are different. If reverse it will look like the picture and pull backwards for the 1-2,3-3........so to get park from 3rd....or back to 1st after burn out....you will need lift the arm while shifting till past the hooks.


    If forward it will be backwards lift to get to 2nd and 1st but after that it will be in blank slot

    I'm leaning towards a full ratchet to not have the extra arm to deal with........looking at ppp also......the m&m looks too bulky to me

    If you scroll through YouTube y I u can see different models in action.......I spend an hr 2 day at summit just playing g with the display shifters to weed out what I didn't like

    I'm old school...I run a T400 with automatic valve body and put shifter in 2 at the line and let it go 1-2 then I shift the 2-3. Have an 8in 4200 ATI. Works great and less stuff to go wrong.

    So I placed my order for my ppp directly through them. Its a rear cable exit, push forward to shift for my reverse pattern, they can add switches for the the reverse activation of my brake ill need to be able to back up without holding a button......and they have the integrated air solenoid

    Ya,I'm still researching this. I'm not a fan of grinding the detent on my shifter to make it work so far. Just in case something happens and I'd have to shift it again. I'll look into the ppp brand.

    I didn't know they had the option for the auxiliary switches for reverse lights and that till I called and talked directly with them. It was the main thing keeping from this shifter.

    I didn't want a pull to shift pattern......one coming back towards me .....on air shift.......im sure I will have my hand there just incase and that thing slamming into my hand didn't sound fun......on a push to shift pattern it goes away from my hand.

    Plus my car is bench seat still so the rear exit cable should be able to go right over and around the seat . Planning on going through the gap under the drop down arm rest

    I like they don't have a second lever for reverse lock out.......well they do but its done with the button up top so its a true 1 handed deal....

    Is you trans a standard pattern or reverse? Ppp has options for both push or pull to shift for both standard or reverse patterns......but it some options are from exit cable some are rear exit cable.......so on front exit a longer cable will of course be needed

    Motion raceworks makes a clean looking air unit too.....but not in a push to shift pattern or not a standard pattern. But i like how motion is building add on like cup holders and mac valve holders to streamline things on theirs

    I dont like the clunky looking factory add on button on the ppp. the crt dual button is slight better looking and looks slightly more functional but still not as smooth looking as some of offering from other shifter manufacturers like the b&m side plate for their postal grip shifters.

    I know a few ppl that have these forbtheir glides......I did play and feel the shifters they have.....the feel very smooth in action, sturdy, and both ppl raved about the performance and how they loved not having to fumble any more to reach the extra reverse lock out lever

    The motion shifter goes 1 step more yet the pull handle is double action so the reverse lockout is simply push that same lever......
    But they don't have any push to shift pattern yet.......when u called they are being down up and planned but not release date

    I have this that I will not be using again. Its glitchey, hit or miss on the shifts.
