You are correct. He redoes all the rivets. I don’t think all the other places do that. And he seems cheaper and faster than other places. Not often you get better for faster and cheaper.
Willie did the hinges on my '53, and now the hood fits a LOT better. He got them turned around quick, was great with communication, and did a really nice job.
I live in Mass and SMS is about 45 mins away. My Wildcat hood was all messed up because the hinges were worn and beat up. They took them apart, straightened and rebuilt. Massive difference. Nice guys too. The business was sold to this owner a few years back. Not inexpensive but he took care of me.
As I said in a much earlier post, I brought two sets of hinges to Willie this summer. He tried his best trying to find some NOS springs for one set. You wouldn’t believe how many springs he bought, and they were not the right ones even though they were listed as the right ones. He keeps them, measures them and saves them for another day. He did the most awesome job on my hinges And I will give him two thumbs up!
He powder coats them for an additional $75. And will paint for $25. He mentions a zinc phosphate option but not sure if that is paint or how it is put on. See note above for options in the email he sends you if you inquire online.
Yes. Mine was the same way. After I closed the hood, I had to push the right rear down. Now it's fine.
Hey Brett, if you are talking about Willie, I believe he charged me $25 for the phosphate coating. I had two pairs of hinges done at the same time so I guess I got a buy one get one free.
That’s correct. I confirmed with him that it is this Eastman paint. If you want them zinc phosphate plated, you will have to get that somewhere else after you get the hinges back from him. https://www.eastwood.com/ew-zinc-phosphate-aerosol-12-oz.html
Thanks fellas. I was talking about sms auto in NH. I'd actually be able to save on shipping costs, as they're about an hour and change away. Just curious what Paul has to say.
Are you sure that by oil phosphate coating they mean zinc phosphate plating followed by an oil coat? https://www.delsplating.com/phosphate-coating.html
I specifically asked about zinc plating. I don't want to put words in their mouth but I believe by oil phosphate they mean parkerizing followed by an oil coat. I believe by Gold CAD they mean a gold cadmium plating. Plating vs. Phosphate & Oil are different processes. Parkerizing, as shown in the video Brett shared earlier, doesn't last as long even with an oil coating (according to the little research I've done)
Oh, so the hood hinges were originally zinc phosphate parkerized, like they do on gun metal, not zinc plated? https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parkerizing
I just sent a message to this company to see if they would do parkerizing on car parts. https://shuffsparkerizing.com/services/parkerizing/
