Im a female college student who loves to get dirty at the track and older cars and trucks. After spending time looking and hoping for a 67-72 Chevy C10 or '69 Olds 442 project I had given up. Lets face it between being a girl wanting to learn and a college student free time, funds and knowladge are just not on my side. Then while looking for a demo car this winter I found a fee '67 Skylark. Having never sceen one before and only talking to the guy on the phone it was set for ther derby. When I saw it my mind changes instantly. As I told my friend "she's to pritty to smash." Even if I did have to dig it outta the snow - did I mention I live in Alaska? The guy almost didn't part with her, but when the snow melted, he moved and she came home with me. So far I have $400 into the rearend he had to go in her and a nicly machined 300 waiting for me to build it on an engine stand in the garage. It was a steel for $600 when the build sheet was $3,200 just for thew machine work. I'm quite excited and just don't know where to go from here. I want a cruser to drag at the local track now and then. I'm not in a big hurry to get it done, as I'm still a college student for another year, but I don't want to cut corners.
We are glad you found us. In a running pole on this site which has 15K members the 67 was voted the #2 most loved year model.
Welcome to V8!! You've stumbled upon the best wealth of knowledge to help you with your project. I believe we have a member or 2 here that also live in Alaska. If you post a thread with "Anyone in Alaska?" as the title, I'm sure you'll hear from them.
Looks as though you have a set of '64 Aluminum heads and a '64 Aluminum intake. Those will all work fine on the '67 engine, just make sure you use the original type beaded steel head gaskets with the aluminum heads and make sure you use push rods for a '64 engine--the aluminum heads aren't as tall as the '65-'67 cast iron heads, so the pushrods are around 1/4" shorter.
Wow. Yep, it's from a '64 Buick. The whole eninge is that I bought for it. I'm missing lifters and engine plugs and then it'll be set. I hope to start building it next month and plan to take the tired 300 out next weekend. Any suggestions what to do with it? I'll be taking it down to a long block before it's all said and done.
I can give you lots of pointers on the 300 if you want to Email me direct at stonesautomotive@juno.com and tell me everything that has been done to it and what parts you have for it. I have built several high performance 300 engines including the one in my '64 Skylark, which is the same engine you are building.
It's a 1964 300 buick, 20 over forged flattoped pistions. The block is bored, honed, linehoned, has a main stud kit in it, steel standard crankshaft, H beam conecting rods, total seal rings, ballanced ratating assembly. Aluminume heads with stainless steal 202 180 valves comp cams 280 hydrolic camshaft, bouble roller timming chain and gears. high volume oil pump and aluminume 4 barrell intake. The mains are turned down slightly to make the bottom end loose, but with a high volume oil pump oil pressure will be normal. I'm thinking it should be about a 300 to 350 hp motor. I just can't wait to finish buildin' her!
Hello nameless college girl, I just wanted to say HI! and let you know that you will find many, and I mean many knowledgeable individuals here on this site. You are just what this site needs, more women that love to turn wrenches. To bad your not into the body and paint part of it. Maybe overtime you will. I wish my Val was into doing body work but that will never happen. Well welcome aboard and enjoy the site.
