I don't see the need for the insults, perhaps I'm not the one that needs to go back to school. Learn to read a little more buddy.

Did you miss the whole part about it being a second hand story, as in, the guy that wrote it (and saw the whole thing) posted it in an Olds group I'm in? All I did was clean up the language a little. How do you know it's not real? Were you there next to the guy? Didn't think so.

Cody.....You're sounding like you're reading John kerry's military record of when he was serving in Vietnam, lol.

I didn't mean to break into your post, just trying to break-up the hostility.

I'm calling the person that originally posted that story an idiot, not mechacode...

The story is just riddled with a bunch on nonsense.

    1. There was no race that took place
    [bob puts head in hands]
just WTH would you require for it to be a race? do they need a christmas tree and a measured 1/4 with computer timing lights or what? sheeesh.

    2. The guy washes car while it is running because he knows it won't restart once it is shut off.
or maybe he preferred listening to his v8 as opposed to a bunch of gangsta C-rap.

    4. You are making fun of imports while you are washing your Toyota.
jeez, for a grammar nazi your lack of reading comprehension is deplorable ... he wasn't making fun of imports he was making fun of riceboy whiggers.

    5. I didn't know 300hp RWD 240's were designed for racing in the wet.
psssst. hey, dipstick, it was the COUGAR that had wet tires. duh.

    6. You need to go back to school and buff up on basic grammar.

    followed quickly by:
Even if this story is true, it is completely rediculous.

spelling is simpler than grammar, so who's the idiot now?

    7. How do you know the Cougar has high compression?

because it's a 69-70. EVERY 65-70 american engine worth talking about came from the factory with ~10:1 compression or more (some of the chevy's were running 11:1). gm cut compression in 71 and the fords lasted til 72. but then, being the erudite thoughtful board member that you are you know that only someone who was totally ignorant wouldn't know that.

    8. I didn't know that old technology is better than new technology.
it isn't. but it is one hell of a lot better than a bunch of aftermarket spoilers, fart cans and fake NACA ducts.

    :spank:

It's a good story but it is just that a story. I'm with atx on this on there are too many assumptions being made about the cars without the substance to back it up for it to be credible. Take it for what it is a story (maybe fiction) and move on. At least it isn;t about how some dumbass in a 6 cyl naturally aspirated buick dusted off a mom in her minivan on his commute into work.

To be honest I used to wash and fill my GTO while it was running for fear it wouldn't start if i shut it off, but then again it had a habit of doing that. I will say this from my time spent braket racing, any cam that has such a radical lift and duration that the car will only idle at around 2K will not sit idling without the driver feeding it gas every so often to keep it running. Bascially within a minute of of getting out of the cougar the car should have died, either from stalling out or from overheating. Also even if the guy did leave the car idling and it was loud, he was showing off too. I don't know anybody who leaves a car idling to drown out music, 1) the music will almost always be louder than any street car (the stereo in my straight piped 67 chevelle could still be heard clearly inside and outside the car) and 2) it is easier to just walk over and tell them to keep it down...which is what most normal nondegenerate people would do, and if that failed get the manager. It's just a story, at least it isn't as lame and irresponsible as what was passing for kill stories on this board before.

I don't see this huge problem with this story. This is what the guy saw, however, this guy is NOT a psychotic car guy so some things may be a little embellished. It's true whether you want to believe it or not though and if you only feel like criticizing a friend of mine, please stay out of my thread.

  10. Go Buick Go

    Go Buick Go Woot!

This thread had a decently chill vibe to it, but that seems to have reversed. This was only a story being passed on, take it for what it's worth and let it be. It's cool to share opinions in a gentlemanly way, not like a dick (I'm aware of what I just said, and that it semi-contradicts.) Now on to what I was going to post before I read the last few posts nit-picking the crap out of the original story:

I myself plan to buy a Subaru WRX STI toward the end of next summer when I get back from a nice little European vacation. The problem that I see with the ricer crowd now is that they seem to value the wow factor much more than the go factor. They also don't seem to value actually knowing wtf you're doing in and around a car.

I think it's kind of a mixed blessing that there is a ricer crowd. Many people are intimidated by the price (and difficulty) of real performance mods, but making their car look fast is not really that hard. Granted this has created a market for only appearance based crap, but there is a large amount of aftermarket support for imports. And yes hollywood has a lot to do with this. Oh, and I'll come back to the hollywood thing later (unless I forget...I'm really tired right now):Do No: I'm not sure, but I do believe turbocharging has taken off quite a bit in recent years...much more so than prior to that, and I'd imagine a constant demand for better turbos and equipment has had much to do with that. And that came from imports. Yes, of course I'm aware of turbo Buicks, but that's much less mainstream than the import craze.

Damn, I can't write very well right now; I'm falling asleep.

Anyhow, my whole point with that is that with such an interest, new technology is constantly being developed and honed, and what I believe to be a faster rate than prior to this craze, although I'm only 22, and therefore not positive. When I was younger, I never really saw/heard/read about turbo and twin turbo v8 mills like now. It was all: stick a huge cam in it.

Now back to the hollywood thing. I don't think the message from hollywood is that imports rock and v8s domestic old iron suck. In fact I'd say it's the opposite. In f&f 1, that charger rocked that twin turbo supra. In the second f&f, you had the yenko camaro and that other car (I'm tired damnit! I forgot) and IMO they were both portrayed in a favorable way. There was XXX with the GTO, that was just bad as hell. In Gone in 60 Seconds, the 67 Stang was practically a main character. I feel the message that hollywood is sending out is that old american iron is the poo (I'm censoring myself.) I also think that kids today would be more into the older cars if they weren't so pricey.

It's much easier to buy a mid ninetys honda, throw rims and a body kit on it, along with a decent spl system, than to buy a muscle car, or even 80 or 90s f-body that's gonna need at least twice the amount of money to get to the same place. That honda is going to get hella gas milage, will run forever, and is overall much more practical, not to mention a fad. I use my 70 LeSabre as my daily driver, and in the past week have spent $60 on gas. That's just not really very feasable for a high school kid. My car requires me to actually WORK ON IT, as compared to the newer imports that seriously go forever (my dad has a nissan that just keeps going.)

Whatever, I'm done. I'm so damn tired that I'll probably re-read this tomorrow and edit the crap out of it. I'm sure I sound like a dip for at least part of my large rant, but I'm sorry, I just can't keep my thoughts straight right now. Yarg!!!:Do No:    :Dou:

First I hope you are not directing it at me. Second, I was critizing the emblishments in the story and the cougar driver's "alleged" behavior, not you your friend who posted it, the guy who supposedly saw it, etc... Frankly there is a lot of bull in the story, we all recognize it and rather than rationalize it or explain it away let's move on. BTW what is this "my thread" bull, you don't own the thread (if that is even possible) anymore than any guy posting a reply to it.

"I've asked that this be locked before further flaming"

Gimmie a break. I don't think anybody was really "flaming", rather discussing the voracity of some ambigious or unlikely details in the story.

Flaming would be calling you a friggin infant for wanting to take such extreme measures as locking the post just because a few guys think that some details are emblished (which you have admitted to being so). Just to give you the benefit of the doubt I went back and looked at the posts and nobody here directly insulted you, and some feel that the guy who "witnessed" the "race" emblished the story. Big friggin deal.

The story is propaganda bull. the purpose of which is to create a division inside our hobby, creating an us vs. them between traditional hotrodders and the "new breed of speed" (man I watch too much Spiketv) mentality by emblishing details in favor of the side of traditional hotrodding while reinforcing poor sterotypes. Are there kids blasting rap music out of all show no go imports in this world, yes - do they make up the majority of the sport compact scene, not really although they are the most visable. You know what, we never hear stories about the kids blasting metallica out of a clapped out 80's monte SS with slapper bars, why because that is the sterotype the traditional hotrodder ignores while poking fun at the sport compact crowd. You would figure that right now, with all the current legislation looking to curtail our hobby we would have figured out that there are bigger rivals to have than ones that exist in our own car crafting hobby. It is pure bull. So what if everybody did not bow in awe to your posting of the story about a cougar, you didn't get a respnse you liked and so you want to pick up your toys and go home. gimmie a break it is just a story. all we can say that is no in dispute is that there was a cougar and a rwd sport compact (maybe a 240 maybe a silvia who knows) and that the cougar won. the rest of the story is creative, fun to read and laced hevily with bull and sterotypical bashing of another faction of our hobby. It was a pretty good discussion until you come out with this idea that you need to steer the direction of the discussion away from people standing up and calling out the bull parts of the story. I personally see more of a problem in your attitude to those who find it offensive to allow bashing of others in our hobby than in the story itself.

    Go Buick Go Woot!

Geeto 67 has a very valid point, and one I think I failed to mention last night while falling asleep at the computer.

I think everyone here needs to just lighten up a bit; remember, these are just stories. A story is made to entertain, if you presented straight facts, and only such, it wouldn't make for quite a boring read. Every piece is going to have some sort of bias or viewpoint expressed through it, in this instance, it was that old school iron is better. Just take it with a grain of salt and move on. Yes, it was heavily embellished, and I could practically smell the poo oozing from it, however it did it's job. It was pure and simple entertainment.

I agree that people in this hobby should stick together against the common enemy (this is how I view it), but the attitudes of young vs old clash. The old people seem to learn restraint as they get older, and also get stuck in their ways. Young people have a tendancy to branch out and do new things, form their own identity and so on and so forth. This should be news to no one. Now, be this as it may, I've seen many of each of these groups (and their respective subgroups) get along. What it basically comes down to is you yourself being the bigger person and ignoring the fools.

I'm also surprised no one has said anything about the street race that apparently went down, as this topic has come up in the past. My feeling on that - there are much worse things you could do. America and Americans seem to feel that they need to pad the world so no one ever gets hurt. Safety this and safety that. Kids under 18 in my town now are required by law to wear bike helmets when they go riding. And do even get me started on this terror alert crap all in the name of safety.

    Guys,

I have requested that this thread be closed. The mods will decide in a while.

If any of you were at the BPG Nationals you will no doubt understand that we in the BPG and on this BB are strictly a friendly lot and want our BB to reflect that tone.

Debate is great, but when threads turn nasty and lead to fingerpointing and name-calling, we take it personally.

What we strive for is a family oriented website, and one with a positive tone.

    Sorry for stepping in.
